Ryan Bender and Reese Guzman won their respective divisions in exciting final rounds at the Lockton Kansas City Junior.
Twelve AJGA champions joined the winner’s circle on Thursday after stellar performances at events spanning six states.
E-Z-GO Vaughn Taylor Championship – Andrew Chong of Grovetown, Georgia, won the Boys Division title by one stroke. The 18-year-old carded nine birdies on his way to a tournament-total 2-under-par 214. Chong also won the 2017 Southeast Junior Golf Tour Brunswick Junior Classic. In the Girls Division, Megan Schofill of Monticello, Florida, claimed her first AJGA title at 2-over-par 218. The 16-year-old has only finished in the top 10 in her two-year career with the AJGA.
Amino VITAL® Junior Championship – Xin (Cindy) Kou of (China) Windermere, Florida, earned her fourth AJGA victory at the Amino VITAL® Junior Championship. The 14-year-old recorded a final round 5-under-par 67 for a tournament-total 5-under-par 211. The 2016 Rolex Junior All-American is No. 29 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings. In the Boys Division, Ranveer Grewal of Ludhiana, India, was the wire-to-wire winner at 6-under-par 210. The 17-year-old carded four birdies in his final round to secure his first AJGA win.
Lockton Kansas City Junior – Ryan Bender of Overland Park, Kansas was the wire-to-wire winner of the Boys Division at the Lockton Kansas City Junior. The Kansas State University verbal commit carded three birdies and no bogeys for a tournament-total 5-under-par 211. Reese Guzman of Kahului, Hawaii, won the Girls Division at 1-under-par 215. The 16-year-old defeated Kornkamol Sukaree of (Thailand) Huntington Beach, California, in a sudden-death playoff on the second hole. The Lockton Kansas City Junior marks Guzman’s third AJGA title.
Folds of Honor Junior Championship hosted by Bob Estes – Jansen Smith of San Angelo, Texas had a record-setting performance to win the Folds of Honor Junior Championship hosted by Bob Estes. He recorded a final found 9-under-par 61 on his way to a tournament-total 19-under-par 191 to tie the AJGA’s 54-hole record. Jo Hua Hung of Taipei City, Taiwan, won the Girls Division by two strokes at 11-under-par 205. The Folds of Honor Junior Championship hosted by Bob Estes marks the second tournament victory for the University of Georgia verbal commit.
AJGA Junior at Purgatory – Hannah Zeman of Ontario, California, earned her first AJGA title in come-from-behind fashion. The 16-year-old entered the final round six strokes off the lead but carded four birdies to finish with a tournament-total 2-under-par 214. Clay Merchant of Noblesville, Indiana, earned his second AJGA victory at the AJGA Junior at Purgatory. The University of Florida verbal commit recorded 13 birdies and three eagles for a tournament-total 14-under-par 202. The 16-year-old earned the win on his home course, Purgatory Golf Club in Noblesville, Indiana.
AJGA Junior All-Star at Hunter Ranch – Ty Griggs of Manteca, California, earned the Boys Division title at the AJGA Junior All-Star at Hunter Ranch after a sudden-death playoff against Aidan Goldstein of Las Vegas, Nevada. Griggs tallied five birdies in the final round for a tournament total 2-under-par 214. Both competitors parred the first playoff hole, but 15-year-old Griggs sealed the win with another par on the next hole. Kaleiya Romero of San Jose, California, finished at 4-under-par 212 to win the Girls Division. The 15-year-old carded 10 birdies and two eagles to finish five strokes ahead of the field. The AJGA Junior All-Star at Hunter Ranch is Romero’s second AJGA title.
