John Daly II, son of legendary professional golfer John Daly, carded an ace on the par-3 seventh hole, hitting a 5-iron from 190 yards. Daly II's father and family was on hand to see his ace in person, his first-ever hole-in-one. After Daly tweeted about the ace, the storyline picked up national coverage, including by ESPN's Darren Rovell.
The Boys Division narrowly edged out the Girls Division in the total birdie count from the first round. The boys totaled 69 birdies, led by 10 on No. 1, while the girls recorded 62 birdies, led by 11 on No. 18. The average of pace of play was 3:29, spurred on by a round at three hours flat to start the day by Jake Beber-Frankel and Rose Zhang.
