CHAN WINS TIGHT RACE IN BOYS DIVISION AT OAK VALLEY GOLF CLUB

Chen shoots final-round 4-under-par 68 to win the TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Knight Cup

BEAUMONT, Calif. — Lorens Chan of Honolulu, hung on to his second-round lead to win the TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Knight Cup on Thursday. His final round 2-under-par 70 gave him a two shot victory over Rak Cho of Brea, Calif. Szu-Han Chen of Beaumont, Calif., fired a final-round 4-under-par 68 to win by four shots. She finished with a three-day total of 2-under-par 214.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Cup was a 54-hole stroke play event held Oak Valley Golf Club. The tournament field featured 102 boys and 42 girls, ages 12-18, from 11 states and two countries. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,952 yards, while the Girls Division played at 6,024 yards. A cut to 67 players was made after the second round.

Chan played steady all day, recording five birdies against three bogeys. He started out on the right foot after he birdied Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 8 to go out in 3-under-par 33. After bogeying the 411-yard par-4 15th, and Cho birdied No. 16 he found himself with only a one-shot lead.

“I stood on No. 17 tee thinking to myself that two pars would do it,” Chan said. “I ended up parring No. 17 and I birdied No. 18. It is a great honor to win against such strong players.”

Cho finished in second with a three-day total of 8-under-par 208. Jay Hwang of San Diego, finished in third after he shot a final round 4-under-par 68 bringing him to a three-day total of 6-under-par 210. Parker Middleton of Phoenix, placed fourth, recording a three-day total of 5-under-par 211. Rounding out the top five was Pete Fernandez Jr. of Bakersfield, Calif. He finished with a three-day total of 3-under-par 213.

In the Girls Division, Chen won her first AJGA event, overcoming a strong field. She took the lead early and never let it go. She recorded six birdies on the day including three in a row coming at Nos. 12, 13 and 14. Despite having the lead, the pressure began to build as she came down the stretch.

“I started to think about what was going on after I bogeyed No. 15 and I ended up bogeying No. 16 too,” Chen said. “But I was able to block it out and come home strong.”

Beverly Vatananugulkit of Cerritos, Calif., took second after shooting an even-par 72 in the final round finishing with a three-day total of 2-over-par 218. Finishing in third with a three-day total of 5-over-par 221 was Monica Petchakan of Encino, Calif.
