Perry leads the Boys Division by one stroke at W. Duncan MacMillan Classic

MAPLE GROVE, Minn.  — Jack Perry of Santa Barbara, Calif., enters the final round of the W. Duncan MacMillan Classic at Rush Creek in the lead by one stroke after carding a two-round score of 4-under-par 140. Michelle Piyapattra of Corona, Calif., fired a second round 5-under-par 67 to record the low score of the week and holds a three-stroke lead in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the W. Duncan MacMillan Classic at Rush Creek is a 54-hole stroke play event held at Rush Creek Golf Club. The tournament field consists of 75 Boys and 24 Girls, ages 12-18, from 22 states and Canada. The par-72 course is being played at 7,107 yards for the Boys Division and 6,193 yards for the Girls Division.

Perry continued to be dominant Wednesday after posting only one bogey on the day.

“I have been hitting and putting the ball well. After making a bogey on hole No. 15, I made a birdie on No. 16 by hitting my 5-iron to three feet from 200 yards away,” said Perry.

Perry also carded two back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5 and 6 to finish 2-under-par on the front nine en route to a second round 2-under-par 70.

“I made three, long 10-20 foot putts on Nos. 5, 6, and 7 to help get me going and record two birdies and a par,” said Perry.

Right behind Perry sits Motin Yeung of Orlando, Fla., at 3-under-par 141. Marcus Plunkett of St. Augustine, Fla., and Gregory Fehrman of Rothschild, Wis., each enter the final round in a tie for third place at even-par-144. Steven Sorenson of Hartland, Wis., is in sole possession of fifth place after a two-round score of 2-over-par 146.

Piyapattra didn't start her day slow. She hit most fairways and putted well for an impressive 4-under-par 32 on the front nine that included four birdies.

“I was 4-under on the front nine. On No. 7 I hit the ball three feet from the hole and made the putt even with a tough hole location,” said Piyapattra.

The 16-year-old did not post a single bogey to finish strong.

“No. 9 was tough. I had to hit a hybrid out of the left side and was hoping it would get on the green but it was left short. I had one chip and one putt to secure par,” said Piyapattra.

Gabriella Then of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is in second place after carding a two-round score of 1-under-par 143. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division is Elizabeth Doty of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., with a 1-over-par 145.
