BLOOMINGDALE, Ill. — Ryan Murphy of Champaign, Ill., shot 4-under-par 68 Tuesday to take the first-round lead in the Boys Division at the Midwest Juniors Players Championship. Ashlan Ramsey of Augusta, Ga., holds a three-shot lead in the Girls Division after posting a 2-under-par 70.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Midwest Junior Players Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Hilton Indian Lakes Resort — Blackhawk Trace. The tournament field consists of 108 Boys and 36 Girls, ages 12-18, from 20 states and three foreign countries. The par-72 course is being played at 6,928 yards for the Boys Division and 6,085 yards for the Girls Division.
Murphy leads the Boys Division by one stroke after taking advantage of par-5's by making two eagles on the back nine.
“I hit really well today, both my drives and long irons were good which allowed eagle chances,” said Murphy.
Murphy shot 1-under-par 35 on the front nine and fired a 3-under-par 33 on the back nine to enter the second round in the lead.
“I have never been in the lead for an AJGA event, tomorrow I hope to play as well as I did today and hope for the best,” said Murphy.
Cyril Suk of Bradenton, Fla., Ross Frankenberg of Barrington, Ill., and Brian Bullington of Frankfort, Ill., all enter the second round in a tie for second place after posting first-round scores of 3-under-par 69s. Rounding out the Boys Division in a tie for fifth with first-round scores of 2-under-par 70 are Steve Skurla of Wheaton, Ill., Daniele Cabriles of Valencia, Venezuela and John Callahan of Hinsdale, Ill.
In the Girls Division, Ramsey is in lead after making birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 en route to a front nine score of 3-under-par 33 for a first round score of 2-under-par 70.
“I was hitting my irons very close and making putts,” said Ramsey. “Tomorrow I hope to make a lot of birdies to make up for the difficult bogey holes.”
Tied for second, are Tanaporn Kongkiatkrai of Bradenton, Fla., and Samantha Postillion of Burr Ridge, Ill., with first-round scores of 1-over-par 73.
