Green finishes low at Mission Inn Resort & Club

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — Daniele Cabriles of Valencia, Venezuela shot a 4-under par 68 in the Final Round for a tournament total of 5-under-par 139 at the Golf World Preseason Junior at Mission Inn. Jaye Marie Green of Boca Raton, Fla., shot a 2-under-par 142 to earn medalist honors in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Golf World Preseason Junior at Mission Inn was a 36-hole stroke play event held at Mission Inn Resort & Club — Las Colinas Course, which hosted it's first of two AJGA events this year. The tournament field consisted of 96 boys and girls, ages 12-18, from 18 states, and five countries. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,846 yards, while the Girls Division played at 5,896 yards.

The Golf World Preseason Junior at Mission Inn was one of eight events being held as part of the Golf Academy of America Preseason Junior Series. The Golf Academy of America Preseason Junior Series is a series designed specifically for first-time AJGA members or those members who have not yet been accepted to or participated in an AJGA event in the current calendar year and/or the previous calendar year.

Playing consistently both days, Cabriles did his best to play well and stay ahead of the competition. Putting was a struggle for Cabriles on the first day as he carded two bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15, but finished the final round bogey free. Cabriles also recorded five birdies in the Final Round including one on the No. 13 542-yard par-5. A student at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy, which calls Mission Inn Resort & Club its headquarters, Cabriles was familiar with the course and believed that this familiarity was a factor in his success. Cabriles claims that keeping a consistent routine keeps his game steady.

“I keep the same routine every time I play,” Cabriles said. “Winning this event is proof that my routine is working and it gives me confidence for the rest of my season.”

In the Boys Division, Nicholas Maruri of Mexico City, shot the low score of the day with a 3-under-par 67 to finish the tournament in second with a 3-under-par 141. In third was Scott Smyers of Lakeland, Fla., with a 1-under-par 143 followed by Caleb Morris of Metter, Ga., in fourth with 1-over-par 145. Tied for fifth with 2-over-par 146s were Chenxiao Duan of Bradenton, Fla., and Kevin Brady of Brandon, Miss.

Yesterday didn't begin very well for Green who finished the front nine 4 over, but today was a different story. Green started her day with a birdie on her first hole, giving her the jump start it needed. In the Final Round Green was up by three strokes when a nose bleed kept her from parring two holes. Before the round, Green's dad reminded her to fight for every stroke. Keeping his words in mind, Green battled back to solidify the lead.

“It felt good to be fighting to be 3 under instead of just fighting for par,” said Green. “I am usually coming from behind but today I was determined not to give my strokes away.”

In the Girls Division, Irene Jung of Jacksonville, Fla., finished the final round with a 3-over-par 147 to earn second place honors. In third was Sarah Hicks of Gulf Breeze, Fla., with a 4-over-par 148.
