Baker climbs to top of Girls Division leaderboard at Stonewall Links

ELVERSON, Pa. — In a round that included three hole-in-ones, Jordan Shuey, 17, of Mechanicsburg, Pa., held off the pack and followed an under-par first round with an even-par 70 to finish at 2-under-par 138 and in the lead in the Boys Division after Wednesday's second round of play at the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior. In the Girls Division, Brigitte Baker, 16, of McLean, Va., shot a two-day total of 12-over-par 152 to take a two stroke lead heading into the final round at Stonewall Links' challenging North Course.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior features 99 players from 14 states and two foreign countries. The field consists of 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18. The Boys Division is playing the par-70 Stonewall Links — North Course at 6,639 yards while the Girls Division is playing the course at 5,881 yards.

Shuey started the round with a double bogey on No. 1, but quickly regained focus to card birdies on Nos. 3, 8, 10 and 18.

“The first hole was tricky. I punched my driver and yanked it left into the high stuff,” Shuey said. “But then I started hitting the ball better and my round turned into a carbon-copy of yesterday. I've really gotten my putter going this week. Every time I missed a green I was able to make a 10 or 15 foot putt to save par”

Going into tomorrow's final round Shuey still believes his efforts can keep him in contention.

“I'm still feeling confident. I just hope it will all pay off,” Shuey said. “I haven't had a win all summer and I would like to have one before its over.”

Bradley Kushner of Mendham, N.J., is just one stroke off the pace at 1-under-par 139. Andrew Lane of Fairport, N.Y., is in third place at 2-over-par 142. Brandon Meltzer of Melville, N.Y., sits in fourth at 3-over-par 143, while Brad Cadigan of South Weymouth, Mass., is in fifth place at 4-over-par 144.

In the Girls Division, Baker carded birdies on Nos. 8 and 12 to finish at 4-over-par 74, a two-stroke improvement from her first round. She said that managing the difficult Stonewall Links' greens is key for scoring.

“I'm just going to try to be consistent and keep it out of the tall grass,” Baker said. “Even some of the flagstick placements that were more forgiving seemed difficult.”

Rounding out the top three is day-one co-leader Christine Shimel of Kennett Square, Pa., in second place at 14-over-par 154. Marisa Kamelgarn of Mahopac, N.Y., and Elizabeth Brightwell of Nellysford, Va., sit tied for third at 17-over-par 157.
