Yang cards second consecutive even-par 72, to hold lead in Girls Division at AJGA Arkansas Junior at Blessings

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Jesse Droemer of Sealy, Texas used magical putting and birdies on five of his last seven holes to stun the Boys Division field with his 6-under-par 66 in the second round. Julie Yang of Phoenix used another round of even-par 72 which included 12 pars, to lead the Girls Division at the AJGA Arkansas Junior at Blessings after two rounds.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Arkansas Junior at Blessings is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Blessings Golf Club. The tournament field consists of 99 players, 75 boys and 24 girls, from 15 states. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,832 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 5,812 yards.

With birdies on Nos. 4, 7, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 18, Droemer navigated the course five strokes better than the next lowest score of the day. In addition, his 6-under-par 66 was his lowest round in a tournament on what he says is the hardest course he has ever played.

“My goal on this course was anything around 75, so this is the best I could have hoped for, I made a lot of putts,” Droemer said. “I was hitting fairways and greens and two-putting on the front nine, then I got going on the back and almost holed out twice from the fairway,” he said.

Droemer heads into the final round with an eight-stroke lead at 3-under-par 141.

In second in the Boys Division is first-round leader Andrew Flesher of Little Rock, Ark., at 5-over-par 149. Kyle Wilshire of Georgetown, Ky., sits in third at 6-over-par 150. In a tie for fourth is Seth Sullivant of Mountain Home, Ark., and Drew Czuchry of Auburn, Ga., at 152.

With no double-bogeys, no three-putts and 12 pars, it would appear reaching the even-par mark came easily for Yang, however, according to her it was far from an average day.

An example of a not-so-average par was when she had to hit a flop shot from the front of the bunker by No. 18 green. It was a shot she had obviously been working on when the result ended up a foot away from the hole for a tap-in to end the day.

“There were a lot of holes where I could have made bogey but I was able to hang on and get a par,” Yang said. “I had a lot of good saves from a lot of difficult places today, so I'm very glad to finish at even-par.”

Seven strokes back of Yang is Sarah Beth Davis of Victoria, Texas with a two-day total of 7-over-par 151. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division is Haley Sanders of Rogers, Ark., at 153.
