Cangrejo victorious in Girls Division with 4-under-par 212


BLUFFTON, S.C.Zachery Sobel of Clearwater Beach, Fla., fired 15-under-par 201 to capture the Boys Division title of the Heritage Junior Championship. In the Girls Division, Luz Alejandra Cangrejo of Bogota, Columbia, finished at 4-under-par 212 for a five-stroke victory.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Heritage Junior Championship was a 54-hole stroke play event held at the Berkeley Hall – South Course. The tournament field consisted of 59 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, from 18 states, Northern Ireland, Canada and Columbia. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 7,059 yards, while the Girls Division played at 6,187 yards.

Sobel followed his stellar third round of 10-under-par 62 with a final round of 1-under-par 71 to capture the title in his first career AJGA event.

“Today, there were tougher conditions to play in,” Sobel said. “I’m very proud of myself for staying patient and focused.  I did what I had to do.” 

In second place at 11-under-par 205 was Smylie Kaufman of Birmingham, Ala. Brian Murphy of Wilton, Conn., concluded the week in third place at 4-under-par 212.  Joseph Byun of Sanford, Fla., and Carson Weinand of Naples, Fla., tied for fourth place 2-under-par 214.

Cangrejo sealed her first career AJGA victory with a 3-under-par 69, the low round of the day in the Girls Division.

“It’s amazing because it’s my first year in the AJGA,” Cangrejo said. “The level is so high and the competition is so hard out here. I know I always have to do my best.”

Kyle Roig of Pembroke Pines, Fla., finished in second place at 1-over-par 217.  Finishing in a three-way tie for third at 2-over-par 218 were Carlie Yadloczky of Casselberry, Fla., Courtney Gunter of Matthews, N.C., and Emilie Burger of Hoschton, Ga.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA, the largest Association of its kind, has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 30 foreign countries.
