CHIP-IN BIRDIE SEALS WIN FOR GRAHEK AT OAKWOOD CLUB
CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Round-one leader, Patrick Grahek of Alpharetta, Ga., took home the Boys Division title Thursday at the Medicus Junior All-Star at Oakwood, carding a 1-over-par 143 tournament total. In the Girls Division, Augusta James of Tamworth, Ontario, took the victory after a playoff with Jordan Lippetz of Bradenton, Fla., with a 155 tournament total.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Junior All-Star at Oakwood was played at the Oakwood Club. The tournament field consisted of 97 players, 73 boys and 24 girls from 22 states and Canada. The course was played as a par-71. The Boys Division played Oakwood Club at 6,509 yards and the Girls Division at 5,822 yards.
Going into the final round as the leader, Grahek came to the course with the attitude to have fun. Starting off strong with a birdie on No. 1, Grahek continued his steady play throughout the rest of his day. Going into No. 18 with a one-stroke lead, Grahek hit his tee-shot into the bunker to the right of the green.
“Coming up to the tee box I told myself that I had to make a birdie to win it,” Grahek said.
Staying relaxed like his coach, Cody Barden, taught him, he took his shot and chipped the ball from the bunker into the hole for the birdie he wanted.
“I owe this to my coach,” Grahek said. “He got me started and gave me the confidence I needed.”
Rounding out the top five in the Boys Division were Nicholas Scott of Union, Ohio, and Robert Register of Burlington, N.C., tied for second place with 3-over-par 145s. Kevin Lee of Dacula, Ga., took sole possession of fourth place with his 4-over-par 146. In a six-way tie for fifth, Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville, Md., Motin Yeung of Orlando, Fla., Grant Weaver of Wooster, Ohio, Boo Timko of Girard, Ohio, Jake Mondy of Blacksburg, Va., and Brandon Hartranft of Lancaster, Pa., finished with matching 147 tournament totals.
In the Girls Division, a playoff between James and Lippetz was the deciding factor in Thursday's final round. With previous experience in playoffs, James was confident she could succeed.
“I went into the playoff knowing that I had not played my best today,” James said. “I was fairly confident though since I've had experience in this before. I won the last playoff that I was in, so I think that helped.”
Lippetz took second place carding a 155 tournament total. Hannah Pierce of King George, Va., finished in third with a 158 tournament total.
