DUSENBURY, VEERMAN SHARE LEAD AFTER ROUND ONE AT TEXARKANA GOLF RANCH Markiewicz trails by two shots at the Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana
TEXARKANA, Texas — William Dusenbury of League City, Texas and Johannes Veerman of Sugar Land, Texas lead by two strokes with even-par 72s after the first-round of the Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana. Mike Markiewicz of Knoxville, Tenn., is in third heading into Sunday’s final-round.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana is a 36-hole stroke play event at Texarkana Golf Ranch. The tournament field consists of 78 boys, ages 12-18, from 16 states. The par-72 course is being played at 6,545 yards.
Veerman jumped ahead of the pack early in the morning recording all three of his birdies on the front nine, including two on the par-4 Nos.1 and 7. The 15-year-old pared an additional 13 holes, finishing with a first round total of 34-38–72.
“I decided to not use my driver unless absolutely necessary,” Veerman said. “I was playing well with my 3-wood and 3-iron and decided to stick with what worked. Tomorrow I’m going to stick with my game plan and continue to hit the fairways.”
Dusenbury also recorded three birdies, two of which were recorded on the par-5 Nos. 8 and 12. The 16-year-old hit 12 fairways and 13 greens for the day. After finishing tied for 28th at the qualifier for the AJGA Championship at Traditions, Dusenbury worked on his swing and alignment to rebound into the leader position going into tomorrow’s final round.
“I pared my first two holes, then birdied No. 15,” Dusenbury said. “I hope to continue to hit the fairways and greens, two-putt every hole and continue to play consistently tomorrow.”
Trailing Veerman and Dusenbury by two strokes is Mike Markiewicz of Knoxville, Tenn., at 2-over-par 74. In fourth, with a 3-over-par 75, is Hunter Smith of Baton Rouge, La. Tied for fifth at 4-over-par 76 are Seth Sullivant of Mountain Home, Ark., Ryan Howard of The Woodlands, Texas, Matthew Mabrey of Little Rock, Ark., Connor Ligon of Richardson, Texas, and Paul McClure of Mobile, Ala.
