Down to the wire finish leaves Gribble three shots short of victory at Redstone Golf Club

HUMBLE, Texas — Morgan Hoffmann, 17, of Saddlebrook, N.J., dueled hefty wind conditions and stiff competition to hold off Cody Gribble of Dallas, on the 54th hole at Redstone Golf Club to win the Houston Boys Invitational at Redstone presented by HP and Administaff.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Houston Boys Invitational at Redstone presented by HP and Administaff was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Redstone Golf Club's Tournament Course, home of the PGA TOUR's Shell Houston Open. The 78-player field featured 15 players from Texas and 20 Rolex Junior All-Americans. In all, 19 states and eight foreign countries were represented. The par-72 layout played at 7,376 yards.

Though he only carded one birdie on the back nine, Hoffmann used pars to pull even with Gribble. His final-round 73 was the day's lowest score, which helped him to a 2-under-par 214 total and a three-shot victory.

“I had to play catch up all day,” Hoffmann said. “I got even and continued to play solid and just had to trust my game.”

Playing in what could be his last AJGA tournament, Hoffmann used par saves on Nos. 16 and 17 to force a tie with Gribble heading into the final hole. After Hoffmann's drive found the fairway, Gribble pushed his tee shot left into the water, leaving Hoffman wide open for the victory.

“There is always a chance until that last putt on 18, you never know what could happen…that's why it's golf,” Hoffmann said.

Gribble, who had difficulty all three days with the par-4 18th, said he wasn't used to a finish this big and the pressure is what got him in the end. Gribble ended the tournament at 1-over-par 217.

“I was hitting the ball well all day, the pressure just got to me,” Gribble said. “It's the best finish I've had in all my Invitationals, so I can't be that mad.”

Second-round leader Kyle Kopsick of Lake Bluff, Ill., finished third at 2-over-par 218 while Sean Einhaus of Borken, Germany, finished fourth at 3-over-par 219. Rounding out the leaders in fifth was Alex Kang of Oak Park, Calif., with a 4-over-par 220.
