KANG FIRES 6-UNDER-PAR 64 TO TIE COURSE RECORD AND WIN AT CORSEMAX/PHILADELPHIA RUNNER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
ELVERSON, Pa. — Hojin Kang of Longwood, Fla., shot a course record-tying 64 en route to winning the Boys Division title by eight shots with a tournament total of 69-71-64 — 204. Sarah Brown of Stewartsville, N.J., carded a final-round 2-under-par 68 and won the Girls Division championship in a three-player playoff after a tournament total 73-75-68 — 216.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior was a 54-hole stroke-play event held at the par-70 Stonewall Links — North Course in Elverson, Pa. The 98-player field featured players from 19 states, Canada and Poland. The Boys Division played the event at 6,591 yards, while the Girls Division played at 5,646 yards.
Kang, who had nine birdies on the day, shot a 29 on the front nine and an even-par 35 on the back nine.
“After the front nine, I just tried to stay calm and cool,” he said. “I really wanted to not get ahead of myself. I had no idea that I had a chance at the course record until someone told me after the round. It's a great feeling and a great way to end the summer.”
Dominic Bozzelli of Pittsford, N.Y., Robert Robertson of Philadelphia, and Brendan Doyle of Beverly Hills, Calif., tied for second with tournament totals of 212. Ryan Gay of Gardiner, Maine, Stephen Dressel of Malvern, Pa., and Stefan Brewer of Charlotte, N.C., all tied for fifth with tournament totals of 213.
In the Girls Division, Brown had four birdies on the day and was able to erase an eight-shot deficit to get into a playoff with Marina Alex of Wayne, N.J., and Laura Hildebrandt of Ancaster, Ontario. Brown birdied the first playoff hole to capture her first AJGA Open Championship.
“My dad has always told me that in a playoff, you win with a birdie,” she said. “I just kept telling myself that if I put it on the green, I will have a great shot to win. I always knew that I had the ability, but it feels great to finally get one under my belt.”
