The claims first victory at the Country Club of Petersburg

PETERSBURG, Va. — Larry Han of Raleigh, N.C., shot a 4-under-par 68 Thursday to take home a victory with a three-day total of 9-under-par 207. Tessa The of Los Altos, Calif., finished first in the Girls Division with a 2-under-par 214 tournament total.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Petersburg was a 54-hole stroke play event held at The Country Club of Petersburg. The 93-player field featured juniors from 26 states and Belgium. The course played at 6,778 yards in the Boys Division and 5,924 yards in the Girls Division.

Han, in his first-ever AJGA event, entered this week with a personal goal of shooting 10 under par for the tournament. He came close, finishing one shot off, after just missing a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 18, his final hole in the shotgun start final round.

“On my last putt, I was trying to make a birdie to get to 10-under,” Han said. “I guess that just didn't work for me, but that was alright. I tapped the second putt in for the win.”

Han entered the final round where he began the second — in third place. But set on winning, Han knew he had to shoot low to break through and gain first place. He said he focused on shooting a good number and paying attention to his competitors' play and decision-making.

“I was putting great, and I knew the putts would just keep on dropping,” Han said. “I feel like this win ends a good season. My game has gotten better over the summer. I knew if I could play well at this tournament it would all come together, and it did.”

Han made the turn at 2-under-par 34 and later gained a one-shot lead on No. 13. He said everything came down to the par-5 15th hole, which he was the only one in his group to birdie, expanding his lead to two shots.

Also in the Boys Division, Grayson Murray of Raleigh, finished in second place with a tournament total of 7-under-par 209. In third place, Tucker Wadkins of Dallas, shot an even-par final round to finish at 6-under-par 210.

In the Girls Division, The said she went into Thursday's round relaxed, yet focused. She began the day with an unanticipated birdie on No. 10 and finished with her first-ever AJGA win.

“On the first hole, I just wanted to hit the fairway and make a decent second shot for par,” The said. “Instead, I birdied it.”

She went on to birdie two more holes on the back nine and three on the front. The said that every aspect of her game was on in Thursday's final round

“I kept getting better everyday,” The said. “It feels good to win. I flew across the country for this. It still hasn't sunk in yet.”

Also in the Girls Division, Michelle Ahn of Chapel Hill, N.C., finished in second place with a 4-over-par 220 tournament total. Kaitlyn Rohrback of Crofton, Md., came in third place with a 221 tournament total.
