SCHMIEDING TAKES HOME MEDALIST HONORS AT SRIXON QUALIFIER
AUSTIN, Texas — Steffan Schmieding of Austin, Texas earned medalist honors at the Fidelity Investments Stars of Texas Junior Srixon Qualifier Monday after carding a 1-under-par 70 at The University of Texas Golf Club. Jacy Benites of Austin, Texas brought home medalist honors for the Girls Division at 5-over-par 76. Schmieding and Benites both earned their first Srixon Qualifier medalist honors.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Stars of Texas Junior Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole shotgun event held at The University of Texas Golf Club. The tournament field consisted of 99 players, 80 boys and 19 girls, from six states and one foreign country. The Boys Division played the course at 6,873 yards and the Girls Division played at 6,018 yards.
Schmieding had a slow start out of the gate, but with a hole-out from the bunker on No. 13 for eagle, he was back in the game. He also holed-out for birdie on No. 17 from the back of the green. On the front nine, he tallied two consecutive birdies on Nos. 7 and 8. Relying on his short game, Schmieding was able to play target golf.
“I just kept to my routine and tried not worry about making any large numbers,” Schmieding said. “I just let my game happen.”
Qualifying for the tournament in the Boys Division were Texas natives Miles Hindsman of Austin, Thomas Birdsey of The Woodlands, Kyle Robbins of Southlake, Austin Phillips of Fort Worth, John Duke Hudson of Sonora, Brandon Pederson of Austin, Garrett Velarde of Houston, Andrew Rollins of Round Rock, Mitchell Griffin of Driftwood, and Sarosh Adi of Frisco.
Edward DeVane III of San Antonio, Chris Contreras of San Antonio, Brian Smith of Corpus Christi, Texas, Taylor Mihok of Aledo, Texas, Zachary Collings of Fort Worth, Texas and Marcos Martinez of The Woodlands, Texas all qualified for the tournament, but choose to take one AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.
In the Girls Division, Benites says she is happy to have finally earned medalist honors. After having a shaky start, with three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 16-18, Benites was relieved to bounce back with a birdie on No. 1. Benites said her short game saved her, being able to chip well and get up and down multiple times to save par.
“The key to the game is to keep it in the fairway and below the hole,” said Benites. “Every time I came from the rough it was harder to get in, so I knew I had to aim for the fairways.”
Also qualifying was Katelyn Sepmoree of Tyler, Texas, Casey Grice of College Station, Texas, Elizabeth Wendt of Houston, Jessica Borth of San Antonio, and Alex Rossi of Austin, Texas.
Grice choose to take one AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.
