TEXARKANA, Texas — Andrew Cho of Howey in The Hills, Fla., fired an opening-round 2-under-par 70 Saturday to grab a one-shot lead heading to the final round of the Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana. In the Girls Division, Maria Loza of Bucaramanga, Colombia, carded a 75 at Texarkana Golf Ranch to take a three-stroke cushion into the final round.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana is a 36-hole stroke play event held at Texarkana Golf Ranch. The 83-player field features players from 20 states and Colombia. The Girls Division is playing Texarkana Golf Ranch at 5,732 yards, while the Boys Division is playing it at 6,465 yards.

Cho made three birdies on his first four holes and finished with six total to help seize the narrow advantage after one round.

“I played well; I was 3-under on the back nine with four birdies,” said Cho, who started the day on No. 10. “I hit it well and I just want to play well (Sunday).”

Ryan Dagerman of Dallas, Austin Gutgsell of Mandeville, La., and Andrew Presley of Fort Worth, Texas, each posted 1-under-par 71s to tie for second place one stroke back of the lead. Cole Carruthers of The Woodlands, Texas, Asa Manor of Marquette, Kan., Stetson McMillan of Hideaway, Texas, and Chandler Rusk of Edmond, Okla., are all knotted in fifth after finishing with even-par 72s.

Loza, who made a key birdie on No. 15, rounded out her day with an even-par 36 on the back nine.

“I think it was a good score,” said Loza. “I hit a lot of fairways and greens (Saturday). I just try to be very positive and shoot my best and that's what I will try to do (Sunday).”

Ji In Park of Cupertino, Calif., Lauren Salazar of Santa Clara, Calif., and Tessa The of Los Altos, Calif., each fired 78s to tie for the second spot three shots behind.
