Sanders seizes medalist honors in Girls Division at The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Rick Huijsman of Bradenton, Fla., carded a 2-under-par 70 to earn medalist honors in the Boys Division at the Srixon Qualifier for the PING Junior at The Woodlands Wednesday. In the Girls Division, Haley Sanders of Rogers, Ark., posted a low round of 76 to grab the top spot by one stroke.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the PING Junior at The Woodlands Srixon Qualifier was held on The Woodlands Resort & Conference Center's Panther Trail Course. The tournament field consisted of 79 boys and 19 girls, ages 12-18, from 13 states, Australia, Canada and Indonesia, all vying for the chance to play in the PING Junior at The Woodlands April 5-8. The Girls Division is playing the Panther Trail Course at 5,996 yards, while the Boys Division is playing it at 6,957 yards.

Huijsman, originally from the Netherlands, fired a 4-under-par 32 on the front nine en route to his 2-under-par total round of 70.

“It was pretty good,” said Huijsman. “I missed only one fairway and hit 16 or 17 greens today, but it was a steady round. I'm really excited about the weekend.”

Other qualifiers in the Boys Division included: Travis Stewart of The Woodlands at 72; Nicko Dodd of Sugar Land, Texas, Cameron Hollek of Richmond, Texas, Trey Kaahanui of Tempe, Ariz., Brad Lyle of Richardson, Texas, Sebastian MacLean of Bradenton, Fla., Malloy Moulis of Lafayette, La., and Thomas Tatum of Dallas at 74; and Patrick O'Meara of The Woodlands, who won on the third hole of the sudden-death playoff after posting a 75. Lyle opted to take an AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

In the Girls Division, Sanders, who is playing in her first-ever AJGA event, was very pleased with her round and her subsequent entry into the tournament field.

“I ended up 1-over after my first nine, but I birdied No. 18, which was my fourth hole, and that was the one I was worried about,” said Sanders. “I hit almost every fairway and I hit more greens today than I did in the practice round, but I was very pleased with how I played today. This is my first tournament, so I'm very excited about playing.”

Other qualifiers in the Girls Division included Erynne Lee of Silverdale, Wash., at 77 and Mary-Michael Burns of Baton Rouge, La., at 79. Jordan Rhodes of San Antonio carded a 77, but opted to take an AJGA Tournament Exemption and will not play in this weekend's event.
