Park, Rah share lead after second-round play at CORE Realty Holdings Junior Classic

DIABLO GRANDE, Calif. — Eric Pitcaithley of Pleasanton, Calif., took rein of the Boys Division for the second straight day carding a two-day total of 1-under-par 143. Jane Rah of Torrance, Calif., came out firing in the second round to tie first-round leader Victoria Sungmin Park of Irvine, Calif., to lead the Girls Division going into Thursday's final round.

The CORE Realty Holdings Junior Classic, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Diablo Grande Golf Resort's Ranch Course. The course will play par 72 in the Boys Division and par 71 in the Girls Division. The field includes 143 players from 13 states and Canada, with 119 from the host state of California.

Pitcaithley carded two birdies on the day and said the course played more difficult in the second round, but he feels confident going into the final round he has what it takes to win.

“Today was a rough day, the course played tough,” Pitcaithley said. “If I make the corrections to my game and believe in myself, I know I have the talent.”

Tied for second with scores of 1-over-par 145 are Allen Kelley of Veneta, Ore., Alexander Schmitt of Tiburon, Calif., and Andrew Perez of Oxnard, Calif. Rounding out the Boys Division tied for fifth are Sam Smith of Turlock, Calif., Michael Gideon of Lancaster, Calif., Taylor Travis of Fremont, Calif., and Jake Sarnoff of Manhattan Beach, Calif.

Park, carded a 5-over-par 76 in Wednesday's second round to carry her first-round lead into the final round. Off the tee, Park hit the fairways but it was her short game that kept her alive.

“Driving was working well for me today, but putting is what helped me make a lot of par saves,” Park said.

Rah, tied for third after the first round, carded a 3-over-par 74 for a 146 two-day total. Rah said going into the final round a solid round of golf is what will get her through.

“In the beginning, I just want a steady round of golf,” Rah said. “I'll start getting aggressive if I need to.”

Rounding out the Girls Division in third place is Eunice Yim of La Canada, Calif. Tied for fourth place are Jenny Lee of La Canada, Calif., and Nara Kim of Diamond Bar, Calif.
