Johnson leads Girls Division by 2 strokes at Dornoch Golf Club

DELAWARE, Ohio — Timothy Madigan of Rio Rancho, N.M., and Jennifer Johnson of Carlsbad, Calif., lead the field after the first-round of action at the Nationwide Insurance Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament. Madigan fired a 6-under-par 65 to take a one-stroke advantage into the second-round and in the Girls Division, Johnson, carded a 2-under-par 69, giving her a two-stroke lead.

The Nationwide Insurance Junior presented by the Memorial Tournament is a 54-hole tournament presented by the American Junior Golf Association at Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware, Ohio. The 99-player field boasts 75 boys and 24 girls from 12 states, Canada, Mexico and India.

Madigan began his day slowly recording a bogey on the first hole, but quickly found his rhythm as he dropped in five birdies on his opening nine, including four in a row on Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6. After another bogey on No. 9, Madigan found himself 3-under-par at the turn. As the heat of the day continued to beat down on the field, he didn't let up at all. He recorded four more birdies on the back nine including back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 and 14. With his performance, Madigan holds his first ever lead at an AJGA tournament.

“Today the hole just seemed to get bigger as the day went along,” Madigan said. “My irons and short game were just incredible. This gives me confidence going into the next two rounds, but keeping it in play is the key.”

In second with a 5-under-par 66 is Evan Wood of Dublin, Ohio, while Adam Sumrall of South Bend, Ind., sits in third with a 4-under-par 67. Sam LaMantia of Trenton, Mich., carded a 3-under-par 68 to put him in fourth. With 2-under-par 69s and in a five-way tie for fifth are Chris Mory of Haslett, Mich., Jake Daly of Cincinnati, Ohio, Matthew Stauch of Dublin, Ohio, Peter O'Neill of Carmel, Ind., and Will Appleby of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

In the Girls Division, Johnson got off to a good start by recording her first birdie on the par-4, 335-yard No. 3. After finding trouble on the fourth hole, she recovered to close out her front nine with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8 and 9. With a sense of confidence, Johnson attacked the back nine by tallying two more birdies on Nos. 11 and 17.

“I played pretty well today,” said Johnson. “The birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 really helped my confidence. I haven't been putting well lately, but my irons were really good today.”

Tied for second in the Girls Division are Amelia Lewis of Jacksonville, Fla., and Allie White of Lancaster, Ohio, with even-par rounds of 71.
