Sarah Brown leads Girls Division by two

STATE COLLEGE, PA.- First-round play was suspended at 1:22 p.m. at the Nike Golf Junior at Toftrees due to inclement weather. Play will resume Wednesday, June 28, at 7:30 a.m. Before play was suspended the Girls Division was able to finish the first round with Sarah Brown of Stewartsville, N.J., holding a two-shot lead.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Nike Golf Junior at Toftrees is a 54-hole stroke play tournament that hosts a 98-player field. Mexico, Canada and 23 states are represented in the field of 75 boys and 23 girls, age 12 — 15.

The Nike Golf Junior All-Star Series is a collection of 10 events specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12 — 15 years old. The competition provides an opportunity for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into open tournaments. The series concludes with an invitation-only Nike Golf Junior Championship, Sept.1 — 3, 2006 in Aurora, Ore.

In the Girls Division, Brown made four birdies to card an even-par 72. Brown finished strong, making one of her birdies on No. 17 and a par on No. 18.

“I played well overall,” Brown said. “I was putting really well. I just need to work on straightening my shots.”

Following Brown is Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City, Tenn., who carded a 2-over-par 74. In a tie for third place are Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ontario, and Veronica Valerio of Temecula, Calif., who turned in matching 4-over-par 76s.

Although the first round of the Boys Division was not complete, Gene Yang of East Brunswick, N.J., and Parker Davis of Chadds Ford, Pa., share the lead with 60 players left to finish. Yang and Ford carded matching even-par 72s.

“I was hitting my driver well and putting it in the fairway, which created a lot of opportunities for me,” Davis said.

Looking into the next two rounds, Yang said consistency will be the key to scoring well.

“It's important that I just try to play well, stay calm and remain mentally focused,” Yang said.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA, the largest Association of its kind, has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and 30 foreign countries.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 160 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 300 wins. AJGA alumni include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Mike Weir, Charles Howell III, Jim Furyk, Grace Park, Cristie Kerr, Candie Kung and Paula Creamer.

Round one will resume with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun on Wednesday, June 28. Second round starting times will begin at 9:00 a.m., adding two hours to original starting times. For more information about the Nike Golf Junior at Toftrees call (814) 234-8000 Ext — 522.
