Top players qualify for Mirasol Junior Championship

ROYAL PALM BEACH, Fla.—The Links at Madison Green proved to be a challenging victory for George Letson of Tampa, Fla., and Stefanie Kenoyer of Lighthouse Point, Fla. Letson finished one stroke ahead of the boys field and Kenoyer claimed the victory by two shots in the Girls Division.

The Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Links at Madison Green. The field featured 91 players, 76 boys and 15 girls, ages 12-18 from nine states and two foreign countries. The top 10 players from the Boys Division and the top two players from the Girls Division qualified to play in the Mirasol Junior Championship, June 6-9.

Taking home the medal Monday was a first for Letson. He carded five birdies and only two bogeys to seal a 3-under-par 69. Letson was one of only five sub-par rounds in the Boys Division.

“My putter was working best for me today,” Letson said. “I made a lot of 10-foot putts and kept it consistent.”

Nine other players from the Boys Division also qualified for the Mirasol Junior Championship. Four players tied for second at 2-under-par 70. These included: Tyler Herndon of Davie, Fla., Byeong-hun An of Seongnam, South Korea, Christian Blanchet of Gainesville, Fla., and Kevin Aylwin of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Also qualifying tied for seventh at 73 are Esteban Calisto of Bradenton, Fla., David Jeh of Bradenton, Fla., Robby Carl of Valrico, Fla., and Troy Byun of Lake Mary, Fla. Bobby Bode of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., qualified via sudden-death playoff at 74.

Andrew Colvin of Longwood, Fla., and Mark Wilkins of Clearwater, Fla., elected to take one AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

In the Girls Division, Kenoyer finished as a medalist for the first time after playing in several previous Srixon Qualifiers. Three birdies on the front nine helped secure the lone sub-par round in the Girls Division at 71 and a place in the Mirasol Junior Championship.

“All the AJGA events are great and I love playing in them,” Kenoyer said. “My putting was really going. It's a lot easier to keep momentum going when you are putting well.”

Kyle Roig of Pembroke Pines, Fla., also qualified following a sudden-death playoff, with a 1-over-par 73.
