Eleven boys, four girls fill field at the Heather Farr Classic

MESA, Ariz. — Troy Anderson of Paradise Valley, Ariz., shot a 3-under-par 68 to take home medalist honors at the Srixon Qualifier for the Heather Farr Classic Wednesday. Joy Trotter of Chino Hills, Calif., sealed the top spot in the Girls Division by carding the only sub-par girls round at 1-under-par 70.

The 18-hole Srixon Qualifier was conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. One-hundred junior golfers from 11 states, including 35 from Arizona, competed for 15 spots in the upcoming Heather Farr Classic. Eleven boys and four girls earned entry into the Easter Weekend event, which will feature 132 players beginning Friday at Longbow Golf Club.

Anderson said his irons played a major role in securing his victory, hitting 15 greens in regulation. Anticipating competing in his first AJGA event, which begins Friday, Anderson's goal is to stay under-par.

“I made some putts and didn't lose any strokes today,” said Anderson. “I need to work a little on chipping but I'm pretty happy how I played. It's my first tournament so I'm hoping for the best.”

In the Boys Division, eleven players will fill the remaining places in the Heather Farr Classic. Jeffrey Kang of Los Angeles, and Matthew Nolasco of Las Vegas, both carded 2-under-par 69s to tie for second to gain entry into the Open tournament. Chris Jones of Laguna Niguel, Calif., shot even-par to finish tied for fourth. Also qualifying for the event are Andrew Gunson of Irvine, Calif., Ryan Sheffer of Tucson, Ariz., Jacob Golembiewski of Chandler, Ariz., Albert Kilgore III of Corona, Calif., Clark Granum of San Diego, Skyler Hong of San Diego, and David Min of Cerritos, Calif. Ricky Montanez of Helendale, Calif., and Niko Bain of Glendale, Ariz., finished tied for fourth in the Srixon Qualifier but opted to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

In the Girls Division, Trotter, who was the only girl to finish under-par, birdied three of her last four holes to secure medalist honors. Trotter chipped in from 25 feet out of the bunker on No. 12 and continued her hot streak sinking a 30-foot putt on No. 13.

“I am looking forward to playing with some of the best players in the country,” said Trotter. “I will be working on my iron shots and my direction before the tournament begins.”

Michelle Yang of Los Angeles, finished at 74 in second place, while Arizona-natives Margarita Ramos (Paradise Valley), and Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale) tied for fourth, both carding 75s. All four will compete in the Heather Farr Classic.
