Vongvanij holds steady in first position for the Boys Division

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Despite increasing winds throughout the morning, Sydney Burlison of Salinas, Calif., shot 6-under-par in the second round to take the Girls Division lead of the American Junior Golf Association's PING Junior at The Woodlands. In the Boys Division, Arnond Vongvanij of Bradenton, Fla., shot a 4-under-par 68 to remain in first place with a two-day total of 135.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the PING Junior at The Woodlands is being held at The Woodlands Resort and Conference Center on the Panther Trail Course. The par-72 course is set up at 6,837 yards for the Boys Division and 6,001 for the Girls. The tournament field consists of 90 boys and 45 girls from 19 states and Canada, including 21 residents from the state of Texas.

Burlison's front nine included three consecutive birdies on Nos. 4-6. She completed the front side at 3-under-par 33. At that point, she had yet to score worse than par in 27 holes.

“My first bogey of the tournament was on No. 10,” Burlison said. “I thought it was going to go downhill from there, but I was able to keep hitting the ball close.”

Burlison rebounded from her bogey with a birdie on No. 14 and three more consecutive birdies on the back nine (Nos. 16-18), helping her to card a 66 for the round, bringing her two-day tournament total to 135.

“I was hitting more club today overall,” said Burlison of the windy conditions. “My setup was better into the greens, which made the course play a lot easier for me.”

With a second round tournament total of 143, Lalita Patipaksiri of Cypress, Calif., holds the number two spot. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division is defending champion Sarah Zwartynski of Allen, Texas, who carded a 144 two-day total.

In the Boys Division, Vongvanij shot a 1-under-par 35 on the back-nine, followed by a front-side 3-under-par 33, including an eagle on No. 9.

“I tried to give myself a chance for birdie on every hole,” said Vongvanij, “but I just couldn't get it going today.”

Starting on No. 10 Saturday, Vongvanij made par on eight of his first nine holes, the exception being a birdie on No. 14. He finished his 18 holes with just one bogey, which was on No. 7.

Paul Haley of Dallas and Patrick Reed of Baton Rouge, La., are tied for second, each posting a tournament total of 138. In fourth is Josh Jones of The Colony, Texas, at 139 for the tournament, and tied for fifth are Kevin Tway of Edmond, Okla., and Cody Gribble of Dallas with a tournament total of 140.
