WIMBERLY TAKES RANDY SMITH CLASSIC BY TWO STROKES IN HOMETOWN
Karle eases to 10 stroke win in Girls Division

LUBBOCK, Texas—Cody Wimberly, 16, of Lubbock, made six birdies in the final round of the Randy Smith Classic presented by Myco Industries, Inc. to erase a two stroke deficit to win the Boys Division. Taylore Karle, 14, of Scottsdale, Ariz., bested the Girls Division by 10 strokes to win the event.

The Randy Smith Classic presented by Myco Industries Inc. was a 54-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University. Texans made up the majority of the field, with 100 of the 120 participating juniors coming from the Lone Star State. Six other states were represented in the tournament and three Rolex Junior All-Americans participated in the event.

Wimberly's tournament total of 212 won the event by two strokes, with Jay Calvo, 18, of Baird Texas who led coming into the final round, carding a tournament total 214 to take second. A clutch finish of birdie-par sealed the victory for Wimberly.

“It feels awesome,” Wimberly said of his first AJGA win. “I had a pretty good feeling I was going to win, people were telling me I had the lead since the 16th hole.”

Rounding out the top five in the Boys Division were Collin Mayer, 17, of Houston, Texas, and Scott Barton, 17, of Dallas, in a tie for third with tournament totals of 215. Tied for fifth were Mark Jones of Odessa, Texas, Brandon Putnam of Santa Fe, N.M., Patrick Logan of Fort Worth, Texas, Dustin Garza of Mission, Texas, and Bobby Massa of Grand Prairie, Texas, each coming in with a tournament total of 216.

After leading by four strokes heading into the final round, Karle shot a 3-under-par 69 during Thursday's final round to polish off her tournament total at 3-under-par 213. According to Karle, her ability to work her way out of trouble was the key to her win this week.

“It feels good,” Karle said. “I tried to get a win last week, it's just nice to get this one.”

At a tournament total of 223, Brittany Tomerlin of San Angelo, Texas, came in second in the Girls Division. Tied for third were Lila Barton of Dallas, and Lindsay Cullen of Allen, Texas, each ending with a tournament total of 228. Sarah Zwartynski of Allen, Texas, rounded out the top five with a 230.
