Calkin and Truitt share Girls Division lead after first round

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Kyle Davis of Kennett Square, Pa., carded a 1-under-par 71 to take a one-stroke advantage after the first round of the Midwest Junior Championship at Rich Harvest Links.  Kelly Calkin of St. Charles, Ill., and Carly Truitt of Marysville, Ohio, share the first-round lead in the Girls Division after shooting a 4-over-par 78.  Wind gusts of 25 miles per hour and a demanding course layout, led to only two rounds of par or better.

The Midwest Junior Championship at Rich Harvest Links is a 54-hole stroke-play event, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association.  The tournament includes 110 boys and girls junior golfers, ages 12-18, from 19 states.  Two Rolex Junior All-Americans and 61 Illinois residents highlight the field.

Davis, 18, had a relatively quiet, yet consistent, front-side 37, recording eight pars and just one bogey.  On his first two holes of the day, he was able to make pars after missing the green with his approach shots.

“I thought I was going to be in for a long day after my first couple of iron shots,” Davis said.  “The two par putts I made on holes No. 1 and 2 made me feel more comfortable with my game.”

After a par on the 10th hole, Davis got back to even par by chipping in from the side of the green for birdie on the par-5 11th.  He followed that up with a birdie at No. 12 when he rolled in a 40-foot putt.   Davis then went on to bogey No. 13, but was able to get back under par for the tournament when he made a birdie on the 17th hole, when his approach shot ended five feet from the hole.

“Yesterday’s practice round prepared me for how tough it was going to be today,” Davis commented.  “I struck the ball solidly and can’t wait to come back out tomorrow and play another good round.”

Trailing the leader by one stroke is Peter Uihlein of North Dartmouth, Mass., who shot an opening-round even-par 72.  A host of individuals are tied for third at 73, including Jeff Kaiser of Onalaska, Wis., who notched a hole-in-one on the 185-yard, par-3 fourth hole.  Also at 1-over-par is Ryan Williams of Scottsdale, Ariz., Kyle Yonke of Lubbock, Texas, and Brendan Gielow of Muskegon, Mich.

In the Girls Division, Calkin and Truitt were able to recover nicely after struggling on the front nine, shooting 43 and 42 respectively.  Calkin carded consecutive birdies on Nos. 10 and 11 after knocking approach shots within five feet of the hole.  She went on to par the remaining seven holes on her back side for a 2-under-par 35.

“I hit the ball really well on the back nine today,” Calkin said.  “Being familiar with the course helped me a lot around the greens.”

Truitt’s front-side 42 included two double bogeys and two birdies.  On the back, the 2003 Rolex Junior All-American was able to shoot a 1-under-par 36 with birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 16th.

“I am really proud of the way I scrambled out there even though I did not hit the ball well,” Truitt said.  “The course is really tough, especially with the wind today.”

Jessica Hauser of Hartland, Wis., and Emily Johnson of Warsaw, Ind., trail the leaders by two strokes shooting first-round 80s.

The second round of the Midwest Junior Championship at Rich Harvest Links will begin Thursday at 7 a.m. off the No. 1 tee.
