Taylor Leon wins the Girls Division title at the AJGA Lubbock Junior

LUBBOCK, Texas— Guillermo Chavez couldn’t have asked for a better ending to his three-day stint at the top of the leader board at the AJGA Lubbock Junior. After having a three-stroke lead over his competition the first day and being tied for the lead the second, Chavez proved that he could indeed win a tournament by means of a sudden-death playoff between Joshua Ray and Mark Jones, all of whom shot tournament totals of 5-under-par 211s. In the Girls Division, Taylor Leon picked up the title by shooting a 3-under-par 213.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Lubbock Junior presented by United Supermarkets & Market Street featured 98 players from eight states, including 72 Texas natives.  The tournament, which was played for the first time, was held at The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

After bogeying the last two holes, Chavez hung on to face off against Ray, 17, and Jones, 16, in a one-hole playoff. He birdied the hole and immediately claimed the Boys Division title.

Chavez, 17, of Clovis, N.M., who shot a 67-73-71, will name the AJGA Lubbock Junior as his first American Junior Golf Association tournament win.

“ I just wanted to come out today and play like I’ve been playing the last couple days,” he said. “My putting was really good today. I made five birdies.”

Ray, of New Braunfels, Texas, made an eagle on the par-5 2nd and carded five birdies on the front nine that put him at six-under when he made the turn.

“The hardest part was staying calm when I was 6-under-par,” he said. “I had a chance to shoot a 29 on the front nine. I had to get up and down from the fringe in two, but I didn’t, so that was hard to take.”

Jones, of Odessa, Texas, shot a 70-71-70, and the birdies he made on the last two holes put him into the one-hole playoff on No. 18.

Behind Chavez, Ray and Jones are Zach Fullerton, 17, of Albuquerque, N.M., and Colton Williams, 17, of Jacksboro, Texas, with tournament totals of 2-under-par 214s.

In the Girls Division, Leon, 17, of Dallas, Texas, said her goal today was to stay three- or four-under, and if she did that, she thought she’d win. She carded four birdies on Nos. 1, 2, 7 and 8, which put her at three-under by the end of the first nine. On the back, she shot a 1-under par 35 for a third round total of 4-under-par 68.

“I’m very relieved,” she said. “I was extremely nervous on my last putt, but now I can say I’m very happy with my performance today.”

This marks Leon’s second AJGA tournament win. In 2003, she claimed the Girls Division title for the I.R.I. Golf Group Oakridge Junior.

Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division are Lauren Espinosa, 17, of Hickory Creek, Texas, with a tournament total of 1-under-par 215 and Stefanie Page, 17, of The Woodlands, Texas, with a tournament total of 1-over-par 217.
