HARGRAY JUNIOR CLASSIC QUALIFIER
Palmetto Hall Plantation – Robert Cupp Course
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
July 5–9, 2004

CHUNG WINS MEDALIST HONORS AT PALMETTO HALL
Kim takes home Girls Division medalist honors

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – David Chung of Fayetteville, N.C., was the only qualifier competitor to shoot under par on the day, and he took home medalist honors in the Boys Division by carding a 1-under-par 71.  In the Girls Division, Joy Kim of Lawrenceville, Ga., shot a 3-over-par 75 to capture medalist honors in the Hargray Junior Classic Qualifier.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Hargray Junior Classic Qualifier featured 76 boys and 6 girls looking to qualify for this week’s 54-hole stroke play tournament.  For the first time, the Hargray Junior Classic is being held at the Palmetto Hall Plantation’s Robert Cupp Course on Hilton Head Island.

With temperatures rising into the mid-90’s under a sweltering late-morning sun, Chung overcame the heat to post the low-round of the day, a 1-under-par 71.

“I think the key to my round was hitting greens in regulation,” said Chung.  “You have to hit them to make par because of the difficulty of the putts.”

Chung shot 36-35—71, including four birdies, three of them coming on par-5’s.

“I’m pleased with the way I played today,” said the 14-year-old Chung. “I kept my driver fairly straight all day, and I think I played solidly.”

Chung chose to use his exemption to enhance his AJGA Performance Based Entry status and will not be competing in this week’s tournament.

Boys earning spots in this week’s tournament were South Carolina natives Sean Goshert of Conway, and John Montgomery of Hilton Head Island; Georgia natives Thomas Mathiassen of Roswell and David Kim of Lawrenceville; North Carolina natives Charlie Ipock and Ryan Bell of Charlotte, Alexander Retsch-Bogart of Chapel Hill, Ryan Kerns of Davidson, and Josh Brock of Wilmington; David Maslen of Merrimak, N.H., and Eric Anderson of Holland, Ohio.

Kim earned the top slot on the leaderboard in the Girls Division with a consistent 38-37—75.  Kim had two birdies on the day coming on Nos. 5 and 8.

Also qualifying for this week’s tournament are Seung-Hyun Lee of Kennett Square, Pa., and Patricia Kim of Midland, Ga.

Titleist, the AJGA’s National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association’s success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, a supporter of the AJGA since 1983, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.

The first round of the Hargray Junior Classic will be held Wednesday with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. off Nos. 1 and 10 tees at the Palmetto Hall Plantation’s Robert Cupp Course.
