LENNAR JUNIOR AT MISSION HILLS QUALIFIER

Mission Hills Country Club — Palmer Course

Rancho Mirage, California

June 27, 2004

SCHULTZ SHOOTS 7-UNDER AND EARNS MEDALIST HONORS

DeLeon wins Girls Division Medalist honors with a 3-over-par 75

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.  The sweltering Southern California heat didn’t slow down D.J. Schultz or his game at the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills Qualifier Sunday. Fifteen-year-old Schultz fought the heat and his competitors to shoot a 7-under-par 65 and earn his place in the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills. In the Girls Division, Melanie DeLeon won medalist honors with a 3-over-par 75 and will also be added to the tournament field.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lennar Junior at Mission Hills will feature 84 players from seven states and Canada, including 70 California natives. The 23rd annual Lennar Junior at Mission Hills is a 54-hole, stroke play tournament that is being held at Mission Hills Country Club — Arnold Palmer Course and will begin on Tuesday.

Schultz of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., had an impressive streak of consecutive birdies on Nos. 4 through 7. He made a total of seven birdies and no bogeys and said his putter was the best thing working on the course for him.

“Everything felt really good,” he said. “ I only missed one fairway and one green. I just tried to hit it close and make it happen from there.”

One thing Schultz found tricky about the course at Mission Hills was the placement of the palm trees.

“They’re right in the middle of where you want to go.”

DeLeon, 17, of Santa Clarita, Calif., said she has room for improvement in Tuesday’s tournament. She started the round with two bogeys, but a birdie on No. 8 gave her the confidence she needed to finish the round.

“I didn’t play really well, but I was able to ride it out,” she said. “Nothing was particularly great except my hard work. I was grinding it out.”

She said she’s excited about competing against some of the top girls in the nation.

“It’ll be nice to see where I stand next to the good girls,” she said.

Rounding out the tournament field alongside Schultz and DeLeon are Erik Jarvey of Palmdale, Calif., with a 69, Phillip Huffman of Villa Park, Calif., Jeff Koprivetz of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Mathew Tom of Norwalk, Calif., with scores of 70 , Sherwin Kim of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Alex Gerstel of Agoura Hills, Calif., and Aaron Smith of Westlake Village, Calif., with scores of 71, Jesse Lee of South Pasadena, Calif., who shot 72 and qualified with a birdie on the third playoff hole, Kim Lorenzana of Long Beach, Calif., Mindy Kim of Diamond Bar, Calif., with scores of 76, and Jennifer Johnson of Carlsbad, Calif., with a 77.

First-round tee times will run from 6:30 - 8:27 a.m., Tuesday at Mission Hills Country Club.
