2004 Canon Cup Rankings Finalized
East vs. West event will take place August 2 - 5 at Caves Valley Golf Club

The race that started June 30, 2003, ended July 6 as the rankings for the 2004 Canon Cup were finalized. With less than a month until the event, the team captains will meet this week at the Rolex Tournament of Champions to finalize the team rosters, which will be formally announced Monday, July 12.

Canon Cup is a unique AJGA event that assembles 10 of the best boys and girls from each side of the Mississippi River in a three-day team competition.

This year Canon Cup will be held August 2 – 5 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. Caves Valley was also the host of the 1997 Canon Cup.

Players are selected based on points that are earned through top finishes in AJGA and other select national junior golf events.

The top eight boys and eight girls from each side of the Mississippi River are selected based on their finish in the Canon Cup points standings.

Two boys and two girls East of the Mississippi River and two boys and two girls West of the Mississippi River will be selected by their respective team captain following the 2004 Rolex Tournament of Champions to fill out the 20-player rosters.

Earning top points for the East boys is Brian Harman of Savannah, Ga. Harman, the Rolex Junior Player of the Year, earned wins at the U.S. Junior Amateur, Polo Golf Junior Classic and the FootJoy Boys Invitational with six top-10 finishes in the past year.

He finishes with 928 total points, 323 points higher than his closest competition.

At the top of the list for the East girls is 2002 Rolex Junior Player of the Year In-Bee Park of Eustis, Fla. Park finishes with an AJGA-high 1318 after tallying three wins at the Rolex Tournament of Champions, Golf Pride Junior Classic and the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Junior. She also has four runner-up finishes so far in 2004.

Leading the way for the West boys is Trent Leon of Dallas. Leon totals 475 points after finishing in the top 10 in AJGA events seven times, including a win at the Justin Leonard/Deloitte Junior Team Championship with Kevin Schultz of Richardson, Texas.

Schultz finished second in the final points standings for the West boys, trailing 115 points behind Leon.

Running ahead of the pack for the West girls is Rolex Junior Player of the Year Paula Creamer of Pleasanton, Calif. Creamer finished with 658 points after wins at the Lessing’s AJGA Classic and the Heather Farr Classic. She also carded runner-up finishes at the Abilene Reporter-News/Lawrence Hall Abilene Junior and the McDonald’s Betsy Rawls Girls Championship.
