Cox Goes Wire-to-Wire at AJGA Philadelphia Open Championship
Kim wins second AJGA event in two weeks at Huntingdon Valley Country Club

HUNTINGDON VALLEY, Pa. — Cody Cox of Milford, Pa., won the Boys Division at Huntingdon Valley with a tournament total of 5-over-par 215. Anna Kim of Chandler, Ariz., topped the Girls Division in a sudden-death playoff with a tournament total of 9-over-par 219.

The AJGA Philadelphia Open Championship was a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Huntingdon Valley Country Club—Toomey & Flynn Courses in Huntingdon Valley, Pa. The tournament field boasted 56 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, from 15 states, Dubai and Canada. The Boys Division played the par-70 course at 6,836 yards and the Girls Division played at 6,019 yards.

Cox got off to a slow start putting and hitting the ball poorly, carding 4-over on the front nine. His game turned on the back nine when he made two birdies on Nos. 13 and 14.

“I made a birdie on No. 13, but Austin Powell answered back birdying the next hole,” Cox said. “He and I went back and forth, every time I made a putt he would answer back. I was just grinding it out trying to get a score together.”

Austin Powell of Jupiter, Fla., was one stroke behind Cox, carding a tournament total of 6-over-par 216. Theo Humphrey of Greenwich, Conn., finished the tournament with a score of 9-over-par 219. Woody Woodward of Bridgeport, W. Va., shot the Boys Division final low round, finishing the tournament in fourth with a final round of 1-over-par 71, three-day total of 10-over-par-220. Rounding out the top five in the Boys Division was Matt Oshrine of Baltimore, Md., with a tournament total of 11-over-par 221.

Both Cox and Kim attribute their wins to a positive attitude out on the Toomey and Flynn courses. Kim had a couple of three- putts and par saves, but continued to keep a positive attitude.

“I tried to just take it one shot at a time,” Kim said. “I just wanted to stay positive no matter what.”

Kim's win last week was her first of the season at the Frederica Open Championship in St. Simons Island, Ga.

“This is two AJGA wins in a row,” Kim said. “Because of the win, it got my confidence up, and now it feels even better.”

Christine Lin of Austin, Texas completed two holes of sudden-death playoff, losing to Kim on the second hole. Lin carded a final round of 2-over-par 72, three day total of 9-over-par 219. Jordan Lippetz of Bradenton, Fla., finished in third with three day scores of 73-74-75, tournament total 12-over-par 222.
