Wood battles through sudden-death playoff to capture first AJGA win at Stonehenge Golf & Country Club Twelve-stroke victory at AJGA Stonehenge Junior Open gives Weaver seventh career AJGA title
WINONA LAKE, Ind. — Adam Wood of Zionsville, Ind., captured the win in the Boys Division after surviving a five-hole sudden-death playoff. Wood posted a 3-under-par 68 in the final round to finish at 10-under-par 203 for the tournament. Lindsey Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz., captured her seventh AJGA win by firing a 2-under-par 69, and a tournament score of 9-under-par 204.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Stonehenge Junior Open was a 54-hole stroke play event with a 36-hole cut at Stonehenge Golf & Country Club. The tournament field consisted of 111 boys and 35 girls from 14 states and three countries, Mexico, Guatemala and Colombia. The Boys Division played the par-71 course at 6,801 yards while the Girls Division played at 6,044 yards. The Girls Division was cut at top 18 girls and ties and the Boys Division was cut at top 56 and ties.
After battling through a five-hole sudden-death playoff, Wood earned his first AJGA win.
“Going five holes in a playoff is difficult. My legs are about to fall off,” Wood said. “To finally capture my first AJGA win, means a lot to me. I know my hard work is starting to pay off.
Falling to Wood in the playoff, Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Ill., shot 3-under-par 68 in Thursday's final round, for a tournament total of 10-under-par 203 to finish second. Tyler Ostrom of Warsaw, Ind., and Zachary Toste of Pembroke Pines, Fla., tied for third with a tournament total of 6-under-par 207. Tying for fifth with tournament totals of 4-under-par 209 were Keegan Vea of Evansville, Ind., and Mason Carmel of Bethesda, Md. Carmel, who started the final round tied for 29th, set a Stonehenge Golf & Country Club course record Thursday with a 9-under-par 62.
Weaver said she was thrilled to capture a win at her last tournament of the summer. In September, Weaver will be participating in the PING Junior Solheim Cup held in Trim, Ireland, and she has already verbally committed to the University of Norte Dame.
“Every tournament, I learn something new about myself and my game. Each one helps me become a better player and prepares me for college,” Weaver said. “This win gives me a lot of confidence and I am going to take what I learned at this tournament and use it next season.”
Catherina Li of Kent, Wash., carded a 3-over-par 74 to finish second with a tournament total of 2-over-par 215. Alexandra Harkins of Crystal Lake, Ill., came in third after carding a 5-over-par 76, for a tournament total of 7-over-par 220.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.
For more information, please contact AJGA National Headquarters at (770) 868-4200, or Rob Doone at
