Lewis claims first AJGA victory at the Frederica Junior Open
Kim outlasts Clark for win in the Girls Division at Frederica Golf Club
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — Joe Lewis of Savannah, Ga., earned his first AJGA victory at the Frederica Junior Open with a 11-under-par 205 tournament total. Anna Kim of Chandler, Ariz., was able to claim the win in the Girls Division after shooting 5-under-par 31 on the front-nine en route to a tournament total of 4-under-par 212 at Frederica Golf Club.
The Frederica Junior Open was a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Frederica Golf Club. The tournament field included 72 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18 from 13 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 7,154 yards and the Girls Division played at 6,243 yards.
In his last AJGA event of his junior golf career before heading out to the University of Mississippi, Lewis was able to capitalize on clutch shots on the back nine to secure his victory. Lewis credited his eagle on No. 15 to his success down the stretch.
“I was even-par until No. 15 and one shot up, so I wanted to be a little aggressive,” Lewis said. “I went for the green in two and hit my approach to five feet for eagle. I knew I had a really good chance for the win after my seven-foot par putt on No. 17 to put me two shots up.”
One shot behind Lewis was Parker Derby of Columbus, Ga., who fired a 3-under-par 69 on the day for a 10-under-par 206 second place finish. Third place went to Joshua Lee of Orange Park, Fla., with a tournament total of 6-under-par 210, while fourth place went to Michael Pisciotta of Alpharetta, Ga., with a 5-under-par 211 tournament total. Rounding out the Boys Division was Michael Monroe of Franklin, Tenn., whose 4-under-par 212 gave him fifth place.
In the Girls Division, Kim earned her first AJGA victory since the 2009 season when she won at the Charles Howell III Junior Championship.
“I had a slow start to the summer,” Kim said. “I really feel like my game is coming together and I definitely have a lot more confidence heading into my last AJGA event of the summer next week.”
Aliea Clark of Carlsbad, Calif., claimed second place after firing a 2-over-par 74 in the final round for an even-par 216 tournament total. Christine Lim of Austin, Texas was one shot back with 1-over-par 217 for third place.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
