Cox Captures First Win at AccuSport Championship hosted by Webb Simpson
Unson sweeps Girls Division at Tanglewood Park - Championship Course

CLEMMONS, N.C. — Chad Cox of Charlotte, N.C., fired a 1-under-par 205 for the tournament, making him the Boys Division champion at Tanglewood Park — Championship Course. In the Girls Division, Andrea Unson took the title at 9-over-par 215 at the AccuSport Championship hosted by Webb Simpson. Rounding out the summer by tallying their first AJGA wins, Cox ended the final round at 5-over-par 71, and Unson at 8-over-par 74.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AccuSport Championship hosted by Webb Simpson was a 53-hole stroke play event held at Tanglewood Park — Championship Course. The field featured 70 boys and 20 girls, ages 12-18, from 16 states, South Africa and Italy. The par-66 course was played at 6,260 yards in the Boys Division and 5,532 yards in the Girls Division.

Cox kept a steady stride through all three rounds totaling 11 birdies. He faced some challenges in the final round with a shotgun start and two-hour rain delay but never lost focus.

“The rain delay left me pretty stiff getting back out on the course,” said Cox. “And the wet ground kept me from striking the ball well. Off the tee, I was hitting the ball really well. I just wanted to keep my mind straight and think of the next shot that I had and not get too far ahead. I really liked playing this course and enjoyed my grandparents getting to come and see me play.”

Following Cox, tied for second, were John Jonas of Jacksonville, Fla., Blake Stasiunas of Leander, Texas, Billy Kennerly of Alpharetta, Ga., Corey Weckerling of Oakwood, Ohio, and Spencer Lawson of Raleigh, N.C., at 2-over par 208 for the tournament.

Starting the final round playing in a mid-heavy rain, Unson was able to keep her lead with five straight pars between Nos. 6 and 10. Throughout the tournament, Unson also collected 11 birdies.

“The weather affected me a little since it was shotgun start but I had to refocus,” said Unson. “I was able to save par on No. 11 after my drive went right of the rough. For my second shot, I just had to play out and my pitch left me with a 7-foot putt downhill. Going into the final round, I was ahead by four and I was able to relax, but I remembered to just stay focused because anything can happen in that final round.”

Following Unson, in second, was Chantakan Chanpalangsri of Boca Raton, Fla., at 10-over-par 216. Tied for third were Alexandra Rossi of Austin, Texas, and Gemma Dryburgh of Bradenton, Fla., with a 217 tournament total.
