Bernstein Victorious in Sudden-Death Playoff at CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior
Kan wins by 15 shots at White Manor Country Club

MALVERN, Pa. — A soggy morning and two-playoff holes later, Sam Bernstein of Riverdale, N.Y., claimed the 2010 CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior trophy after shooting an even-par 71 to finish at 8-over-par 221 for the tournament. Aurora Kan of Boothwyn, Pa., came in second last year in this event and was victorious, finishing with an even-par 213.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the CorseMax/Philadelphia Runner Junior was held at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa. The field featured 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 16 states. The par-71 course played at 6,889 yards for the Boys Division and 6,057 yards for the Girls Division.

Bernstein was playing in his last AJGA event before starting his freshman year at Yale University next week. He was able to stay consistent, even through a two-hour rain delay.

“This win turns my whole summer around and gets me excited to play college golf,” Bernstein said. “The rain delay did affect me somewhat, but I was even-par before it and finished even-par after it. I played conservatively and tried to hit the middle of the greens because I was a little stiff. I felt so lucky to make it into the playoff.”

Chris Houston of Gilford, N.H., and Patrick O'Leary of Milton, Mass., shot final rounds of 1-over-par 72 and 3-over-par 74 to finish in second with tournament totals of 8-over-par 221. Sean Kelly of Staten Island, N.Y., and Michael Davis of Newtown Square, Pa., were one shot back with 9-over-par 222.

Kan kept a cool head throughout the round to finish with 3 birdies, 2 bogeys and a double bogey.

“I didn't worry about the other things going on today, like the rain,” Kan said. “I stuck to my plan, used my yardage book and reviewed my shots before hand. Things got rolling for me right off the bat on No. 1 when I got a birdie.”

Samantha Wagner of Clermont, Fla., finished second for the second week in a row, ending her tournament with a 15-over-par 228. Stani Schiavone of Bangor, Pa., and Emily Gimpel of Lafayette Hill, Pa., tied for third after carding final rounds of 7-over-par 78 and 5-over-par 76 respectively to finish at 17-over-par 230.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 30 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 400 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.
