Local Player Garber Leads at Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands
Bertuccioli jumps to an early lead in the Girls Division at Boyne Highlands Resort - Heather Course

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich.- Joey Garber of Petoskey, Mich., carded a 3-under-par 69 to claim the lead after the first round of the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands. In the Girls Division, Martina Bertuccioli of Cordoba, Argentina, recorded a 2-under-par 70 to lead by two strokes.

The Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Boyne Highlands Resort — Heather Course in Harbor Springs, Mich. The 143-player tournament field features 108 boys and 35 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states, Argentina, China, Thailand and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,996 yards while the Girls Division is playing at 6,077 yards.

Garber, the second-youngest champion of the Michigan Amateur, started the day strong with a birdie on the first hole to set the pace for the rest of the day. He credited his successful round to solid ball striking and his trio of birdies.

“Last week I won the Michigan Amateur and that really boosted my confidence coming into the first round today,” Garber said. “This is my home course so I knew where to hit it on the greens. For the upcoming rounds I hope to keep capitalizing on my putts and to make a few more birdies.”

Chad Merzbacher of Dublin, Ohio, Yifan Liu of Guangzhou, China, KK Limbhasut of Bangkok, Thailand, and Mark Folkwein of New Albany, Ohio, are tied for second place at 1-under-par 71.

Bertuccioli, the K12 Qualifier medalist in the Girls Division, attributed her strong first round to a good mental game and consistent putting.

“Today was a good day for me,” Bertuccioli said. “My putting was consistent and I am just excited to get back out there tomorrow. I want to continue to improve my game.”

In the Girls Division, Morgan Ransom of Columbus, Ohio, and Christina Foster of Concord, Ontario, are tied for second sitting at even-par 72.
