McDaniel Overtakes Boys Division Lead at the Nemacolin Junior Classic Pattamakijsakul keeps a steady hold at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort - Mystic Rock Course
FARMINGTON, Pa. — After being a part of a 6-way tie following the first round, Todd McDaniel of Manchester, Ky., emerged as the sole leader of the Boys Division at the Nemacolin Junior Classic with a two-round total 3-under-par 141. Thanya Pattamakijsakul of Nonthaburi, Thailand, held on to her lead in the Girls Division heading into the final round with a 1-over-par 145.
The Nemacolin Junior Classic is a 54-hole stroke-play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort — Mystic Rock Course in Farmington, Pa. The 142-player tournament field features 108 boys and 34 girls, ages 12-18, from 19 states, Thailand, Indonesia, United Kingdom and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,979 yards while the Girls Division is playing at 6,054 yards.
McDaniel conquered the difficult Mystic Rock Course shooting a 2-under-par 70, while carding five birdies for the round.
Despite a struggle with putting throughout the day, he feels good with his play going into the final round. The course has challenged McDaniel in every aspect this week and knows he must be on top of his game to keep the top spot.
“The layout of the course is just unbelievable. If you're not sharp you will not play well out here,” McDaniel said of the course. “For tomorrow, it's just a matter of hanging in there on this course. You have to bring it all three days to win it.”
Craig Hornberger of Ephrata, Pa., Jason Sauder of Mount Joy, Pa., James Yoon of Bradenton, Fla., and Andrew Lister of Haymarket, Va., are tied for second each shooting a two-round total of 1-over-par 145.
Pattamakijsakul has carded some of her best performances this week. First, she was the Girls Division medalist at Monday's K12 Qualifier to gain entry into the tournament, and she has held the clear lead through the first and second rounds. She had two birdies for the day on Nos. 9 and 18. Pattamakijsakul started on No. 10 and felt the birdie on No. 18 gave her confidence and momentum going into the front nine. For the final round, she hopes to remain consistent with driving and putting as she looks to improve on her iron play.
“I plan to just keep playing like I have today and yesterday but I need to focus on my irons,” said Pattamakijsakul. “Sometimes it does not go the way I want so I have to chip and go up and down, which makes things difficult.”
Lindsey Murray from Tipp City, Ohio climbed from fifth to second with a two-round total 5-over-par 149. Juliet Vongphoumy of Providence, R.I. is in third with a 6-over-par 150.
