Beck Comes From Behind for First Win at AJGA Junior at Steelwood Presented by AT&T Stackhouse wins playoff after hole-in-one, birdie finish at Steelwood Country Club
LOXLEY, Ala. — Jimmy Beck of Columbus, Ga., fired a bogey-free 4-under-par 68 to finish at 5-under-par 211 and claim his first career AJGA victory at the AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T. In the Girls Division, Mariah Stackhouse of Riverdale, Ga., defeated Michelle Butler of Dunedin, Fla., in a playoff after finishing her round with a hole-in-one on No. 17 and a birdie on No. 18.
The AJGA Junior at Steelwood presented by AT&T was a 54-hole tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Ala. The event featured 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 11 states and China. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 7,014 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 6,034 yards.
Beck, who started the final round three strokes off the lead, carded four birdies, including three in a four-hole stretch, on the way to his first AJGA victory. Consistent play throughout the tournament was the key for Beck.
“I had 52 good holes this week and only two bad ones,” Beck said. “It feels really good to get my first win and I am going to come out of this tournament with a lot of confidence.”
Tolver Dozier of Dothan, Ala., Robby Shelton, IV of Wilmer, Ala., and Mason Seaborn of Montrose, Ala., finished in a three-way tie for second at 3-under-par 213. Tom Lovelady of Birmingham, Ala., rounded out the top five at 2-under-par 214.
In the Girls Division, Stackhouse made par on the first playoff hole to top Butler after the two finished tied at 3-over-par 219. Stackhouse says the difference for her in the final round was her ability to get up and down for par.
“Today I made par saves,” Stackhouse said, “The first two days I wasn't leaving myself many short putts and when I did I would still miss some of them, but today I made them.”
Gabi Oubre' of Mobile, Ala., and Elizabeth Doty of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., finished in a tie for third at 5-over-par 221.
