LEIGH MEDALS BY ONE STROKE AT WOODWARD VIDEO JUNIOR AT THE GREENBRIER K12 QUALIFIER
White earns Medalist Honors in Girls Division at The Greenbrier - Meadows Course

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. β€” Preston Leigh, 17, of Suffolk, Va., carded a 2-under-par 69 Thursday at the K12 Qualifier for the Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier to take Medalist Honors in the Boys Division. Alexandra White, 14, of Haymarket, Va., posted an 80 to medal in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the K12 Qualifier for the Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier was an 18-hole stroke play event held at The Greenbrier β€” Meadows Course in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. The field featured 71 boys and 8 girls, ages 12-18, from 18 states and Canada. The par-71 course was played at 6,756 yards for the Boys Division and 6,068 yards for the Girls Division. K12 Qualifiers give juniors an opportunity to "play their way in" to coinciding AJGA Open tournaments or earn a Tournament Exemption or Performance Star for a future event. In all, 15 boys and 2 girls advanced from the K12 Qualifier and have the opportunity to play in the Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier, which begins Saturday, September 5. The K12 Qualifier Series offers opportunities for AJGA juniors at approximately 50 AJGA Open events.

Leigh played a well rounded game, relying on good putting and solid irons. Leigh was able to recover several times after a bad drive to make an up and down, resulting in only three bogeys during his round. On No.1, a 353 yard par-4, Leigh was almost able to hole out from the fairway, leaving only a tap in for birdie. Leigh caught fire from there making birdies on three of his next seven holes, Nos. 1, 2 and 7.

β€œI was able to hit some good shots today and make some good putts,” Leigh said. β€œI've been hitting well recently and just getting some good rolls. Playing a solid round like this gives me a lot of confidence going into the tournament.”

Joining Leigh in the tournament which starts on Saturday are Seth Nooe of Williamsburg, Va., Jonathan DiIanni of Kernersville, N.C., Andrew Gai of Westport, Conn., Stuart Kaufman of Armonk, N.Y., Christopher Valianos of Virginia Beach, Va., Mason Short of Waldorf, Md., Trevor Rosekrans of Haslett, Mich., Victor Monte of Chantilly, Va., Trey Rule of Palm Beach, Fla., Brandon Collier of Nicholasville, Ky., Sam Stark of Hartland, Mich., Ryan Gilbert of Morrisville, N.C., Brandon Liu of St. Albans, Mo., and Sean Bosdosh of Clarksburg, Md.

Choosing to take an AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this weeks event are David Kostyal II of Wilmington, N.C., Maclain Huge of Lovettsville, Va., and John Reali of Searingtown, N.Y.

In the Girls Division, White felt she didn't play her best today, but was still able to make par or better on nine holes, including a birdie on No. 7. White's inspiration for the day came from her littler brother who gave her a flower prior to teeing off on No. 13. After already playing the maximum of five open events, White was unable to play in the tournament this week.

β€œHe gave me the flower right before I was about to tee off. It turned out to be a good luck flower as I ended up making par on the hole,” White said. β€œI just wanted to use this as warm up for the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational.”

Girls who qualified to play in the Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier were Elyse Smidinger of Crofton, Md., and Isabelle Galantino of Westbury, N.Y.
