CHAN BRINGS THE HEAT AT OAK VALLEY GOLF CLUB
Okino maintains Girls Division lead at the TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Knight Cup

BEAUMONT, Calif. — Lorens Chan of Honolulu, posted a 5-under-par 67 for a two-day total of 8-under-par 136 to lead the Boys Division by four strokes. Daniela Okino of Elk Grove, Calif., sits alone atop the Girls Division leaderboard after Wednesday’s second round at the TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Knight Cup.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Knight Cup is a 54-hole stroke play event being held Oak Valley Golf Club. The tournament field features 102 boys and 42 girls, ages 12-18, from 11 states and two countries. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,952 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 6,024 yards.

After shooting 3-under-par 69 during Tuesday’s first round, Chan brought the heat again, posting a bogey-free 5-under-par 67. The rising sophomore played a flawless round, recording five birdies on Nos. 4, 8, 9, 11 and 16.

“I was pretty consistent today,” Chan said. “I was keeping the ball in play, hitting greens and making pars, so I am pretty proud of what I did today.”

Rak Cho of Brea, Calif., and Pete Fernandez Jr. of Bakersfield, Calif., are tied for second after each posted two-day totals of 4-under-par 140. Tied for fourth are Parker Middleton of Phoenix, Jay Hwang of San Diego, and J.J. Holen of Castaic, Calif., after each posted two-day totals of 2-under-par 142.

In Girls Division, Okino started out strong, making birdies on Nos. 10, 12 and 17 to finish the back nine (her front) at 2-under-par 34. She struggled a bit on the front nine, recording bogeys on the first four holes. However, Okino remained level headed and finished the round at 2-over-par 74, to finish with a two day total of 1-over-par 145.

“It’s hard getting off a bogey train,” Okino said. “But I really wanted to make birdies, so I started hitting fairways and greens, which calmed me down. I ended on a birdie, which was great.”

Beverly Vatananugulkit of Cerritos, Calif., Andrea Unson of Murrieta, Calif., and Szu-Han Chen of Beaumont, Calif., all sit in second place with two-day totals of 2-over-par 146.
