BERNSTEIN PLAYS THROUGH RAIN AND INTO LEAD AT NEMACOLIN JUNIOR CLASSIC
Lee extends lead in Girls Division at Mystic Rock

FARMINGTON, Pa. — Sam Bernstein, 17, of Riverdale, N.Y., fired a 1-over-par 73 to take control of the Boys Division Thursday by one stroke. Suzie Lee, 17, of E. Northport, N.Y., continues to lead in the Girls Division after carding a 2-over-par 74.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Nemacolin Junior Classic is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort — Mystic Rock Course. The tournament field consists of 105 Boys and 38 Girls, ages 12-18, from 23 states, Canada, Indonesia and Mexico. The par-72 course is being played at 6,978 yards for the Boys Division and 6,137 yards for the Girls Division.

Bernstein felt he played solid despite overcoming some interesting weather conditions during the afternoon round. When Bernstein started his round it was raining, turned sunny as he made the turn, and poured rain as he holed out on the eighteenth green. Berstein improved his putting from his first round by avoiding three putting during his round. Berstein was able to hit his irons solid all day and keep the ball in play by making par or better on 16 holes, including a birdie on No. 17 to finish at 2-under-par 142.

“On No. 17 right as the storm was coming, I hit my 5-iron in to the wind and rain,” Bernstein said. “I was able to hit it within five feet of the hole and made my only birdie of the day. It was a good way to end my round.”

Ji Soo Park of Centreville, Va., moved in to second place carding a 1-under-par 143. Austin Romeo of Erie, Pa., sits in third place with a 2-over-par 146. Ben-Marvin Egel of Kokomo, Ind., Peter Eiler of Holland, Pa., and Motin Yeung of Orlando, Fla., all finished their rounds tied for fourth with a 3-over-par 147.

After not feeling well early in the morning, Lee over came it to extend her lead to six strokes. Starting on No. 10, Lee made the turn by carding back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 2. Using her long game to her advantage, Lee was able to eagle the par-5 466 yard fifth hole and finish at 2-under-par 142.

“My goal today was to make par on every hole,” Lee said. “I just want to stay focused on what I am doing and continue that into the final round.”

Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y., remains in sole possession of second place with a 4-over-par 148. Alyssa Shimel of Perrysburg, Ohio, Sun Gyoung Park of Vail, Ariz., and Irene Jung of Jacksonville, Fla., are all tied for third place at 7-over-par 151.
