REE RETAINS LEAD AT BOYNE HIGHLANDS RESORT

Garces leads Girls Division by one stroke at the Coca-Cola Junior All-Star Championship at Boyne Highlands

 

HARBOR SPRINGS, Mich. – Ryann Ree of Redondo Beach Calif., held onto the Boys Division lead by one stroke. He currently sits with a two-day total of 1-under-par 143. Silvia Garces of Cali, Colombia, took the Girls Division lead after Thursday’s second round of the Coca-Cola Junior All-Star Championship at Boyne Highlands, carding a 2-over-par 74 for a two day total of 7-over-par 151.

 

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Coca-Cola Junior All-Star Championship at Boyne Highlands is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Boyne Highlands – Moor Course. The tournament field consists of 101 boys and 32 girls, ages 12 to 15 from 27 states, Columbia and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 layout at 6,808 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,046 yards.

 

Ree shot 4-over-par 76 Thursday, which brought him to a two-day total of 1-under-par 143. After posting a 6-over-par 42 on the back nine (his front), Ree rebounded making birdies on Nos. 4, 7 and 8.

 

“I tried to forget about the front nine and tried to make birdies coming in.” Ree said.

 

One shot back is Jordan Niebrugge of Mequon, Wis., who shot 2-over-par 74 to finish with a two-day total of even-par 144. Kyle Kochevar of Glen Ellyn, Ill., is in third after carding a 3-under-par 69 to sit at a two-day total of 1-over-par 145. Chandler Fischer of Nicholasville, Ky., finished the round at 3-over-par 75 for a two-day total of 2-over-par 146. Tied for fifth are Chris Noble of Niles, Mich., Tee-k Kelly of Wheaton, Ill., Woody Woodward of Bridgeport, W.Va., and Gajan Sivabalasingham of Ballantrae, Ontario, each posting two-day totals of 4-over-par 148.

 

In the Girls Division, Garces leads by one stroke. She started the round slowly, recording bogeys on Nos. 10 and 11, but managed to keep her head in the game recording birdies on Nos. 1, 3 and 12.

 

“I concentrated on two-putting each hole and the birdies started to come.” Garces said.

 

Vivian Tsui of Markham, Ontario sits in second after shooting 7-over-par 79 for a two day total of 8-over-par 152. Rounding out the top three is Alexandra White of Haymarket, Va. She shot 4-over-par 76 to finish with a two-day total of 7-over-par 153.

The Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series is a collection of 11 events specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12–15 and presents opportunities for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into Open tournaments. Juniors are limited to a maximum combination of five AJGA Open and Junior All-Star Series events during a calendar year. The series concludes with the Junior All-Star Invitational over Columbus Day weekend for winners and top finishers in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series events.

 

Final-round tee times for the Coca-Cola Junior All-Star Championship at Boyne Highlands will run from 7:30 - 9:09 a.m. and noon1:30 p.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at the Boyne Highlands Resort – Moor Course.
