SHIN FIRES 3-UNDER-PAR 69, SITS ALONE ATOP THE ROLEX GIRLS JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP LEADERBOARD
Seven players within three shots of the lead at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — Jenny Shin of Torrance, Calif., carded a 3-under-par 69 Wednesday to take a one-shot lead at the Rolex Girls Junior Championship over Tiffany Lim of San Jose, Calif. Despite her steady play, she has her work cut out for her as she battles a tough field which features 23 Rolex Junior All-Americans.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Rolex Girls Junior Championship is 54-hole stroke play event being held at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. The tournament field features 78 of the best junior girl golfers in the nation, ages 12-18, from 15 states, Colombia, Mexico and Canada. The par-72 course is playing at 6,207 yards.

Shin, a two-time Rolex Junior All American and the champion at 2009 Heather Farr Classic presented by Longbow Golf Club, carded four birdies on the day at hole Nos. 3, 9, 10 and 17. She came into the first round with one thing in mind: fairways and greens. Her plan was executed to near perfection.

“I only missed one fairway all day,” Shin said. “I didn't try to make a lot of birdies; I just had a few lucky shots that ended up working out for me.”

With seven players nipping closely at her heels she is trying to stay focused on the task at hand.

“I'm not going to get carried away by being the leader,” Shin said. “It's the first day of the tournament and I can't overlook the next two rounds.”

Following closely behind Shin is Lim, who shot a 2-under-par 70 and is sitting in second. Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., is two shots off the lead after carding a 1-under-par 71. Emily Tubert of Burbank, Calif., Victoria Tanco of Bradenton, Fla., Emma Lavy of Fayetteville, Ark., Kristen Park of Buena Park, Calif., and Tanaporn Kongkiatkrai of Bradenton, Fla., are all tied at fourth at even-par 72.
