YUN, KIM LEAD CLEVELAND GOLF/ SRIXON BOYS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP HOSTED BY JIM FURYK
Arizona natives post 11-under-par 133 at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club
GOLD CANYON, Ariz. Andrew Yun and Chun-Ji Kim of Chandler, Ariz., posted a 36-hole total of 63-70 133 to finish 11-under-par heading into Sunday's final round at the Cleveland Golf / Srixon Boys Team Championship hosted by Jim Furyk at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Cleveland Golf / Srixon Boys Team Championship hosted by Jim Furyk, is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club Prospector Course. The tournament field consists of 36 teams with players ages 12-18 from 14 states and China. The par-72 course is being played at 7,225 yards. The teams are competing in three different formats: modified scotch, foursome and four-ball.
Team Big Bang, as Yun and Kim call themselves, has set the bar high going into the final round. The team carded 11 birdies today during the two rounds, nine during the first round on Nos. 1, 2, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14, 15 and 17.
Yun, 17, is currently ranked No. 6 in the Polo Golf Rankings, and was champion at the I.R.I./Srixon Mixed Team Championship hosted by Jim Furyk in 2007. He is also a 2008 first-team Rolex Junior All-American and has signed a National Letter of Intent with Stanford University.
We became best friends through golf three years ago and have really learned each others game, Yun said. We were feeding off each other's strengths today out there, I was trying to make the greens and he was sinking in the putts.
The twosome is soaking up the moment but admit they need to keep an edge on their competition for Sunday's final round.
We've got a lot of work to do out there tomorrow, Kim said. We're just going to have fun and stay focused.
18-year-old Kim tied for ninth at the AJGA Cliffs Championship in April, and has six top-20 finishes in his AJGA career.
Three shots behind Yun and Kim is team Bronx Bombers, consisting of Shane Lebow of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Ramsey Sahyoun of Reseda, Calif. Tied for third place, five strokes back are team Wonderboys, made up of James Back of Cerritos, Calif., and Daniel Lee of Valencia, Calif., and team Kamikazes, comprised of Michael Kim of Del Mar, Calif., and Brian Campbell of Irvine, Calif. Rounding out the top five are Team Sharpshooters, consisting of Byeong-hun An of Bradenton, Fla., and Seiji Liu of Beverly Hills, Calif., and team David and Goliath, made up of Reid Martin of Mukilteo, Wash., and Tyler Kato of Seattle, carding a 5-under-par 139.
