HAK GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE FOR FIRST AJGA VICTORY
Tanco battles back in the Girls Division to take home trophy.

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Shun Yat Hak of Lake Mary, Fla., carded a final-round score of 2-over-par 73, which was good enough for a one-shot victory in the Boys Division at the Mizuno Junior at Innisbrook. Victoria Tanco of Bradenton, Fla., won the Girls Division with a tournament total of even-par 210

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the 16th annual Mizuno Junior at Innisbrook was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club. The tournament field consisted of 138 boys and 77 girls, ages 12-18, from 27 states and seven foreign countries. The Boys Division, which was cut to the low-60 players and ties after Saturday's second round, played the par-71 Copperhead Course at 7,305 yards, while the Girls Division competed on the par-70 Osprey North Course, which was played at 5,911 yards.

After placing in the top 10 in other AJGA events last season, Hak had been anxiously awaiting a champion's trophy. Scores were close coming through the back nine and carding a bogey on his last two holes, he wasn't sure where he would finish. Hak carded 1-over-par scores on both the front and back nines to win by a single stroke.

“I think every tournament is an experiment,” said Hak. “I didn't use my irons very well so I relied on my short game to save my round.”

In the Boys Division, Michael Hebert of Orlando, Fla., and Davis Lee of Hilton Head Island, S.C., tied for second with tournament totals of 3-over-par 216. M.J. Maguire of St. Petersburg, Fla., finished with a 6-over-par 219 for fourth place. Rounding out the top five was Motin Yeung of Orlando, Fla., with a 7-over-par 220.

Tanco's week didn't start out the way she had hoped but after a solid 2-under-par score on day two, she put herself in contention at just two strokes off the lead entering the final round. With four birdies in the final round, Tanco, the 2008 Rolex Junior Player of the Year, shot to the top of the leaderboard and claimed her third-career AJGA victory.

“I didn't putt like I wanted to early in the week, but it all came together today,” said Tanco. “The course is not very easy, so I knew I would just have to wait for birdies.”

Yueer Cindy Feng of Orlando, Fla., took second after a tournament total of 4-over-par 214. Rounding out the top three was Michelle Butler of Dunedin, Fla., who carded a 5-over-par 215.
