SMITH ENTERS FINAL ROUND WITH LEAD AT THE GOLF WORLD PRESEASON JUNIOR AT MISSION INN
Shelly leads Girls Division with an even-par 72 at Mission Inn Resort & Club

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — Korey Smith of Murfreesboro, Tenn., shot a 2-under-par 70 and holds the lead heading into Sunday's Final Round at the Golf World Preseason Junior at Mission Inn. Jacqueline Shelly of Fernandina Beach, Fla., has a one-stroke lead in the Girls Division after the first round of play.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Golf World Preseason Junior at Mission Inn is a 36-hole stroke play event being held at Mission Inn Resort & Club — Las Colinas Course, which is hosting it's first of two AJGA events this year. The tournament field consists of 95 boys and girls, ages 12-18, from 18 states, Canada, Colombia, Sweden, and Venezuela. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,846 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,896 yards.

The Golf World Preseason Junior at Mission Inn is one of eight events being held as part of the Golf Academy of America Preseason Junior Series. The Golf Academy of America Preseason Junior Series is a series designed specifically for first-time AJGA members or those members who have not yet been accepted to or participated in an AJGA event in the current calendar year and/or the previous calendar year.

Smith got off to a great start with birdies on the first two holes, but faltered a little when he recorded bogies on Nos. 6 and 7. He quickly jumped back into rhythm with a birdie on No. 9 to finish the front nine with a 1-under-par 34. Smith credited his putting to his stellar first round start.

“The greens were nice and true. They rolled smooth,” said Smith. “My putting saved me quite a few times.”

Smith held steady through the back nine picking up another birdie on No. 13. He finished the back nine at 1-under-par for an overall 2-under-par 70 on the round.

One shot behind the lead and tied for second is Daniele Cabriles of Valencia, Venezuela and Samuel Jabba of Bogota, Colombia each with a 1-under-par 71. Three boys are tied for fourth after each carded a 1-over-par 73, including John Foster of Concord, Ontario, Chenxiao Duan of Bradenton, Fla., and Jack Hernandez of Ft. Myers, Fla.

In the Girls Division, 15-year-old Jacqueline Shelly holds a one-shot lead entering the final round. Shelly started slow with three bogeys on the front nine but finished well with three birdies on the back.

“The course was a little tricky with doglegs that kept me from hitting driver off the tee at times,” said Shelly. “I got off to a good start on the back nine with birdies on Nos. 10 and 11.”

Sitting in second with 1-over-par 73s are Sarah Hicks of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Tatiana Pineda of Bogota, Colombia, Irene Jung of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jaye Marie Green of Boca Raton, Fla.
