PRESLEY NAMED CHAMPION AT THE UNDER ARMOUR® / HUNTER MAHAN CHAMPIONSHIP
Hu steals top spot in Girls Division at TPC Craig Ranch
MCKINNEY, Texas — Andrew Presley of Fort Worth, Texas, birdied No. 18 to card a 3-under-par 69, in the Boys Division at the Under Armour® / Hunter Mahan Championship. His 54-hole total of 5-under-par 211, landed him his first victory. Bonnie Hu of Fremont, Calif., carded a final-round score of 73 to finish at 2-over-par 218 in the Girls Division.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Under Armour® / Hunter Mahan Championship featured 48 boys and 24 girls — ages 12-18 — from 13 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the course at 7,052 yards while the Girls Division played the course at 6,104 yards.
Presley approached this week's tournament with the determination to play well. He knew with the competitive field he would have to focus on hitting his targets and not focus solely on scores.
“I was playing the golf course and not the players,” Presley said. “Today with the wind I just took it one shot at a time and that really helped my game a lot.”
Presley, 17, finished second in both the Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana in 2007 and the Stars of Texas Junior presented by Horseshoe Bay Resort last year.
In the Boys Division, tied for second place are Alberto Sanchez of Nogales, Ariz., and Anton Arboleda of La Canada, Calif., who carded 2-under-par 214. In fourth is Michael Kim of Del Mar, Calif., who finished at even-par 216. Rounding out the top five at 1-over-par 217 are Gregory Yates of Mansfield, Texas and Mario Clemens of Beverly Hills, Calif.
Hu, 17, had a strong round today, making solid putts that scored her five birdies on Nos. 6, 8, 9, 10 and 14. Her strategy was to combat the wind today with a conservative game, avoiding hazards at all costs.
“Today was a big day for me considering I have never finished first in an AJGA event,” Hu said. “My long birdie putts really helped me on the front nine and I just tried to remind myself to play consistent golf despite the weather conditions.”
In the Girls Division, Hana Lee of Hacienda Heights, Calif., shot a three-round-total of 219 for second place. Tied for third are Emily Tubert of Burbank, Calif., Jade Staggs of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Rachel Morris of Carlsbad, Calif., who carded a three-round-total 224.
