WYATT, WINTHER VAULT TO TOP OF LEADERBOARD AT HP BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP AT CARLTON WOODS
Grillo, Spieth tied one shot back at 3-under-par 141

THE WOODLANDS, Texas — The leaderboard at the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods saw much movement through the second round Sunday and by the end of the day, two new co-leaders came into the clubhouse. Patrick Winther of Howey in the Hills, Fla., and Bobby Wyatt of Mobile, Ala., are tied for the lead heading into the final round each having shot a two-round total of 4-under-par 140.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods is a 54-hole stroke play event being played on the par-72, 7,358-yard Fazio Championship Course at The Club at Carlton Woods. The 78-player field features 16 players from Texas and 23 Rolex Junior All-Americans. In all, 23 states and six foreign countries are represented.

For Winther, who claimed a victory at the Polo Golf Junior Classic in November, playing a consistent and steady game has been the key to success. His mental preparedness helped him climb from a tie for fourth into a share of the lead.

“My mental game has been really important at this tournament,” Winther said. “I haven't been hitting a lot of fairways, so it's a lot of mental work to stay positive and not get down on myself.”

His work has paid off, as he is one of only three players to card back-to-back sub-par rounds.

Wyatt, a 2008 honorable mention Rolex All-American who began the day tied for ninth, joins Winther at the top of the leaderboard. Shooting a bogey-free round, Wyatt carded 15 straight pars to begin the day, only to fire off three birdies on Nos. 16 through 18.

“I've hit the ball well and played pretty steady,” the sixteen year old said. “Once I got to No. 16, I was able to get close and give myself some birdie opportunities.”

In a tie for third are Emiliano Grillo of Resistencia, Argentina, and first-round co-leader Jordan Spieth of Dallas, each having recorded 3-under-par 141. Sitting alone in fifth is Cheng-Tsung Pan of Upland, Calif., with a 2-under-par 142.
