KORTE, MCLAURIN ON TOP IN BOYS DIVISION AT DALHOUSIE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
Gulugian takes lead by two shots in Girls Division at Dalhousie Golf Club
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. β Dustin Korte of Metropolis, Ill., and Jordan McLaurin of Ironton, Mo., share the lead in the Boys Division going into the final round of the Dalhousie Junior Championship with two-day totals of 7-under-par 137. Ani Gulugian of Irvine, Calif., carded a second round 4-under-par 68 to take the lead in the Girls Division.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Dalhousie Junior Championship is a 54-hole stroke play event (36-hole cut) being held at Dalhousie Golf Club. The tournament field features 105 boys and 38 girls, ages 12-18, from 26 states and Canada. The field was cut in half to include the top 48-boys and ties (12-over-par 156) and top 18-girls (21-over-par 165) and ties after the second round Wednesday. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,992 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,049 yards.
Korte started off the No. 10 tee and went 34-39 on his nines to finish with a second round 1-over-par 73. He said his short game was not as good as it was yesterday and that he looks to get that edge back for Thursday's final round.
βI made a lot of birdies and bogeys today,β Korte said. βI was just blowing it past the hole a lot of times, tomorrow I just need to not get greedy and settle for some two-putts.β
McLaurin, playing in the afternoon wave Wednesday, started the day tied for third place and had another solid round featuring six birdies against one bogey to card a second-round low 5-under-par 67.
βThis is my last junior tournament and I just want to go out with a bang,β McLaurin said. βI've finally gotten my putter rolling [during this tournament] and today I didn't miss anything under five feet, that's what helped me go low.β
In third place is Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge, La., at 2-under-par 142. Paul McConnell of Garland, Texas, is in fourth with an even-par 144. Sitting tied for fifth are Blake Biddle of St. Charles, Ill., Will Handley of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Kyle Wilshire of Georgetown, Ky., all at 1-over-par 145.
In the Girls Division, Gulugian shot 10 strokes better than her first round Tuesday, totaling five birdies and one bogey on her way to a two-day total of 2-over-par 146. Gulugian is coming off a win at last week's Bass Pro Shops/Payne Stewart Junior Championship and is also battling a shoulder injury that hampered her game during the first round.
βI just feel better today, [my shoulder] is still bothering me but not as much,β Gulugian said. βMy distance control was much better today, letting me hit more greens.β
Lauren Salazar of Santa Clara, Calif., is in second place with a two-day total of 4-over-par 148. Bonnie Hu of Fremont, Calif., rounds out the top three at 6-over-par 150.
