HUANG SHAKES UP FIRST ROUND OF TEE UP JUNIOR CHALLENGE
Jang 1-under in Girls Division going into second round at Oak Valley Golf Club

BEAUMONT, Calif. — Tao Huang of Beaumont, Calif., fired a 5-under-par 67 to take the Boys Division lead after the first round of the TEE UP Junior Challenge. Anna Jang of Aiea, Hawaii, sits atop the Girls leaderboard after carding a solid 1-under-par 71.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the TEE UP Junior Challenge is a 54-hole stroke-play event being held at Oak Valley Golf Club. The tournament field consists of 103 boys and 41 girls, ages 12-18, from nine states, Taiwan and China. One hundred and twenty-three hail from the home state of California. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 layout at 6,937 yards, while the Girls Division is playing it at 6,076 yards.

Huang, a native of Taiwan looked to come out strong for his last tournament in the United States this summer. He did just that by tallying four birdies on the day along with an eagle on the par-4 12th.

“I hit a 3-wood to the right to about 130 yards,” Huang said. “After that I used my 8-iron and it went right in. I couldn't believe it.”

Tied for second behind Huang are Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, and Robbie Mamo of Apple Valley, Calif., both recording 3-under-par 69s. Daniel Lee of Valencia, Calif., sits in fourth at 2-under-par 70. Alexander Forss of Temecula, Calif., Bobby Lange of Sherman Oaks, Calif., and Chien Yao Hung of Sinjhuang City, Taiwan, all carded 1-under-par 71s to tie for fifth going into the second round.

For the Girls Division, Jang credited her successful round to sinking most of her putts when needed.

“I made most of my 3 to 5foot putts,” Jang said. “It was a very consistent day for me. I think it helped to stay relaxed and just play everything out one at a time.”

Jang had 28 putts in 18 holes of golf which helped to contribute to her two birdies on Nos. 16 and 17.

Tied for second in the Girls Division, with even par 72s, are Kristin Coleman of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., and Beverly Vatananugulkit of Cerritos, Calif.
