ZECH CLAIMS EARLY LEAD FIRING 6-UNDER-PAR 66 IN KANSAS CITY
Lederhausen holds two-stroke lead at Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Ryan Zech of Kearney, Mo., set the mark low, firing a 6-under-par 66 in the opening round of the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior, Tuesday. Alexandra Lederhausen of Hinsdale, Ill., leads the Girls Division by two strokes in the final AJGA event of her career.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Oakwood Country Club. The tournament field features 74 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 21 states and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,522 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 6,038 yards.

In hopes of giving himself an early birthday present, Zech took the lead carding five birdies and an eagle on No. 15. The 15-year-old, who turns 16 on Friday, was very comfortable in his first career AJGA event. The 6-under-par 66 sets a new career low for Zech, besting his previous low of 68. Zech did the most damage on the back nine, shooting a 5-under-par 31 while totaling only 11 putts.

“There were pretty good scoring conditions today,” Zech said. “I hit my driver really straight today. There are a lot of birdies out there if you keep your drives safe.”

Ryan Marks of Warrensburg, Mo., sits in second at 4-under-par 68. Kevin Gillick of Scottsdale, Ariz., is in third at 3-under-par 69. Tied in fourth are Harry Higgs of Overland Park, Kan., and Adam Welch of Chesterfield, Mo., at 2-under-par 70.

In the Girls Division, Lederhausen grabbed the top spot early in the day. Of her six birdies, four came on par-5s. The 2008 graduate has signed a National Letter of Intent to play with Northwestern University in the fall, making this her last AJGA event.

“I took advantage of some of the par-5s,” Lederhausen said. “Usually I am nervous in tournaments and my emotions are up and down, but I was really calm today.”

Currently in second is Katie Sylvan of San Diego, sitting at 1-over-par 73. Kristina Nhim of Buena Park, Calif., who shot a 2-over-par 74, is in third.
